FILM/TV BITS: Foxx wants black Bond; J.Lo’s ‘Dallas’ drama; Star Jones’ crib; Angelou/Chappelle on Sundance; ‘Love & Suicide.’(August 8, 2006)
*Jamie Foxx hopes that the next James Bond flick will have a black man in the starring role. The Oscar winning actor, currently in theaters as Detective Tubbs in “Miami Vice,” tells London’s Sun Online: “Bond has got to come on up, man. They’ve got to get with the times. It needs oomph right now. Diddy would have made a good Bond.” *Jennifer Lopez has not given a reason for her decision to leave the upcoming film adaptation of “Dallas,” where she was to play Sue Ellen Ewing. But the New York Post quotes sources who put the blame on a terrible script and the “less-than-strapping” John Travolta, who will step into the role of J.R. Ewing immediately following his stint opposite Queen Latifah in the film “Hairspray.” A source tells the paper: "The script sucks. And John Travolta? If it had been a man's man like Ed Harris or Tommy Lee Jones . . . but you don't just go from doing 'Hairspray' to 'Dallas.'” *After trying to sell her New York penthouse apartment for the past year and a half, Star Jones Reynolds has reportedly taken the property off the market. A spokesperson for the New York real estate firm the Corcoran Group said the condo is "temporarily off the market" for unspecified reasons. New York Post reporter Braden Keil tells TMZ.com that the firm had to take the listing down once before, when an Internet gossip site posted it and it attracted 14,000 hits in one hour. *Maya Angelou and Dave Chappelle are among the celebrities booked for the second season of Sundance Channel’s “Iconoclasts.” Executive produced by Robert Redford, the hour-long series features two artists from different fields who come together to discuss their creative processes. Chappelle and Angelou will be featured on the season finale, scheduled to air Nov. 30. Other participants include Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and surfer Laird Hamilton (Oct. 26); Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and chef Alice Waters (Nov. 2); filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and singer/songwriter Fiona Apple (Nov. 9); actress Isabella Rossellini and inventor Dean Kamen (Nov. 16); and Paul Simon and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels (Nov. 23). The six-part series will air weekly at 9 p.m. ET/PT. *“Love & Suicide,” the first narrative-feature film shot in Cuba in 47 years, opens in Miami, FL courtesy of AMC Theaters. The movie is the first independent multi-cultural, bilingual, crossover film to hit the big screen with a major theatre chain. Award winning filmmakers Luis Moro and Lisa France wrote the love story that follows Tomas (Kamar de los Reyes) and Nina (Daisy McCrackin) as they’re guided through Havana by Cuban taxi driver Alberto (Moro). In this journey, Tomas discovers the one thing between love and suicide. “Every screening we’ve done has been a success,” said Moro. “‘Love & Suicide’ is like the now famous ‘March of the Penguins.’ We are ‘The March of the Cubans.’” “Love & Suicide” premieres with special sneak previews at 11:55 a.m. Aug. 11, 12 and 13 in the AMC Theatre Cocowalk 16 (3015 Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove). The film opens its full run the following week. Check www.AMCTheatres.com for show times or call (305) 466-0450. Speak Out
