COURTNEY VANCE SUED BY FORMER TALENT AGENCY: Lawsuit claims actor fired them to deprive them of extra commission.

*A talent agency is suing former client Courtney B. Vance for unpaid commission, claiming they were fired by the actor to avoid the payment of benefits entitled under their contracts.

In the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last Tuesday, Endeavor agency and Dolores Robinson Entertainment claim the actor terminated their contracts in August 2004 after he purportedly was not signed for another year on the NBC drama “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.”

But, after he fired his agents and managers, Vance and Studios USA
Television, which produces the drama, agreed to extend his original
agreement without any changes other than a pay increase. The plaintiffs
claim Vance fired them so that he wouldn’t have to pay the increased
commissions – which according to the lawsuit, should have been at least
$126,680.

Endeavor and Dolores Robinson Entertainment are seeking their 10
percent commission in connection with his earnings for the 2005-06 season of
“Law and Order: Criminal Intent,” as well as for future seasons of the show.
Vance, the husband of actress Angela Bassett, left the show at the end of
last season.

The plaintiffs also seek unspecified compensatory damages for breach
of contract, and Endeavor asks the court to order a constructive trust for
all payments received by Vance.

TUPAC’S MOM TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA NEXT MONTH: Afeni Shakur to scatter son’s ashes in Soweto and hopes to meet with Nelson Mandela.

*Afeni Shakur, the mother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur, will visit
South Africa from Sept. 10 through Sept. 18 to mark the 10th anniversary of
her son’s passing, as previously reported.

With her sister Gloria Cox and daughter Set Shakur in tow, Afeni
Shakur will scatter some of Tupac’s ashes in the town of Soweto, the
birthplace of South Africa’s struggle against apartheid.

Afeni, who once served as a section leader for the Black Panther
Party, will be honored for her contribution as an activist for the rights of
black people and the oppressed as well as for her bringing her son’s ashes
to Africa.

"I feel blessed to be able to visit South Africa, especially Soweto,”
Afeni said in a statement. “Events that happened there are so much a part of
our history and it will be an honor for my son to rest in this special place
-- the birthplace of the South African struggle for democracy.”

Also during her visit, Shakur will meet with South African Kwaito
star and actor Zola. As previously reported, the musician and activist will
record vocals to be featured along side Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac on a
10th Anniversary CD.

Additionally, Afeni is hoping to meet with former South African
president Nelson Mandela, as she works to develop a relationship between the
Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation.

“Nelson Mandela's contribution to the people of South Africa has been
immeasurable and I look forward to helping with his work all over the
country," Afeni said.

The return of Tupac Amaru Shakur's remains to the birthplace of his
ancestors will be celebrated in a traditional African ceremony with a praise
singer on the 10th anniversary of his death, Sept. 13. In attendance will be
prominent political leaders, the South African government, representatives
of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and guests of the Shakur family.

In other Tupac news, the British Film Institute and National Film
Theater will present an educational study focused on the rapper’s film work.
Entitled "Tupac Shakur Reinterpreted," the 13-day London study will begin
Sept. 15 and screen among his films 1992’s “Juice” and “1997’s Gridlock’d.”
The purpose of the event is to examine the rapper’s movies as they relate to
hip hop, his fans and mainstream media culture. “Reinterpreted” is scheduled
to run through Sept. 28.

PROTESTS MEET FOURTH EPISODE OF MTV2’S ‘DOGS’: Cartoon portrays
scantily-clad black women as canines to be ordered around.

*Watchdog groups are protesting an episode of MTV2’s new animated
series “Where My Dogs At?” that featured a Snoop Dogg-like character walking
two bikini-clad black women on leashes.

“Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander voices the character Snoopathon
Esquire III, who emerges from his Cadillac with armpieces Parkay and
Marjorie in the episode. Snoop barks to one of them, “Hand me my latte.” The
woman squats on all fours and begins scratching herself like a canine,
according to the New York Post. At one point in the episode, Snoop puts on a
plastic glove to pick up poop made by one the ladies.

Before Sunday’s “Flavor of Love” premiere, that scene might’ve seemed
a little far-fetched. But, thanks to the contestant nicknamed “Somethin,” we
know it’s entirely possible that a grown woman would defecate on the floor
(or on stairs). Still, the whole women-in-submission vibe of the episode has
caused outrage among watchdog groups.

"This only serves to reinforce negative images of women, conveying to
kids on a Saturday afternoon that all women are bitches and hos," said Paul
Porter, founder of IndustryEars.com. "In my 10 years of monitoring
children's programming, I've never seen anything this offensive."

      R.E.A.C. Hip-Hop Coalition, a media-justice group, has labeled the
episode “misogynistic” and is calling for MTV to ban it from ever airing
again. The half-hour episode, titled "Woofie Loves Snoop," debuted on MTV2
last month and was available on MTV.com – until it was removed last weekend.

MARIAH LAUNCHES TOUR IN MIAMI: MTV review says singer impresses with vocals, but spends too much time changing costumes.

*Here’s what ticket holders for Mariah Carey’s “The Voice, the Hits,
the Tour” can expect based on Sunday’s opening night in Miami.

According to MTV.com, Carey doesn’t disappoint vocally – she hits
her high Cs – but she was barely on the stage due to numerous breaks for
costume changes.

Playing on screens throughout the two-hour concert were Spike
Lee-helmed video clips calling attention to the rumors and gossip Carey has
dealt with in recent years. DJ Clue also pitched in to kill time between
Mariah’s outfit changes.

Carey’s costumes were revealed in a media event last week, so no
need to rehash the outfits. In a nutshell, MTV said she “showed off a lot of
skin, wearing a black bikini with a cape, two different gowns with exposed
midriffs, and a metallic red burlesque number that lent itself to lots of
straddling poses behind a straight-back chair during ‘Breakdown.’”

The Web site noted that many of her songs were reduced to snippets,
including “One Sweet Day” with her homie Trey Lorenz. Also, opening act
Busta Rhymes never returned as promised to join Carey on their song, “I Know
What You Want.” Instead, Carey used Busta’s portion of their 2003 video
during her rendition. The technique was also used to feature Jay-Z for
“Heartbreaker,” Jermaine Dupri for “It’s Like That” and the late Ol’ Dirty
Bastard for “Fantasy.”

A gospel choir appeared for Carey’s performance of “Fly Like a Bird,”
one of the show’s big numbers, along with “Make It Happen” and “Hero,”
according to MTV.

She shooed her dancers off the stage to perform a more intimate
rendition of "Don't Forget About Us" and "Always Be My Baby."

As for her biggest hit, "We Belong Together," she belted that one
during an encore – and nailed the song’s final dramatic note, MTV reports.

CASSIE’S ‘ME & U’ VIDEO CONTROVERSY: Teen singer says she’s not biting off of Janet; previous video for the song pops up on You Tube.

*One look at pop singer Cassie’s video for “Me & U” and one can only
assume the 19-year-old is paying homage to Janet Jackson’s classic 1986
video for “Pleasure Principle,” as both clips feature the singers dancing by
themselves in an empty rehearsal room. Cassie, however, says that assumption
is wrong.

"I'd love to emulate her career. She's incredible, from her moves to
her voice,” Cassie says about 40-year-old Janet, according to Contact Music.
"I'm a diehard fan of Janet but …I was just rehearsing in the studio, they
filmed me and the record label thought it would be great for the video."

The so-called “Pleasure Principle” ripoff wasn’t the first video shot
for “Me & U.” A more sexually-themed clip filmed before the artist signed to
Diddy’s Bad Boy label surfaced on the Internet last week. It features Cassie
singing to a man (the camera) as she takes him home to have sex.

According to the latest Internet buzz, the entire song is about a
specific form of sex, and the original video captured the concept more
blatantly than the current version shot by Bad Boy.

NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN O.J. TAPES ON NEW WEB SITE: JudgeOJ.com features NFL vet cavorting with women, dissing Oprah, mocking his lowered status.

*A Florida producer who followed O.J. Simpson around with a video
camera between 2001 and 2005 has pared the footage down to 75 hours and made
it available for viewing on a new Web site.

Launched yesterday, JudgeOj.com  features the one-time accused
murderer getting his freak on with a group of women at a Philadelphia night
club, dissing Oprah Winfrey during an interview with DJ Star at New York’s
Power 105 radio station, and sitting at an Atlanta bus stop telling the
camera that folks "kicked my ass right to the curb."

According to the New York Post, producer Norman Pardo said he created
the free Web site to provide insight into the man acquitted 11 years ago of
slaying ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Pardo says he
began taping Simpson after their mutual attorney suggested he go on a road
trip with O.J. to help repair his image. They visited 20 cities throughout
the East Coast and Midwest over four years, encountering people who both
cheered and jeered the gridiron great.

In the clip with DJ Star, who was arrested in May for making sexual
threats to a rival DJ's four-year-old daughter, Simpson says Winfrey "seemed
to give the other side a lot of time" during his murder trial. Star calls
Oprah a "nappy-head country b***h." Simpson replies, "Oprah's not a truthful
person."

Another clip features Simpson dispensing dating advice to a member of
his entourage as they rolled through Raleigh, N.C. After the admirer presses
Simpson for specific tips, the "Naked Gun" actor says, "I can take you to
the trough, but I can't put the p***y on top of you."

JudgeOj.com will feature new clips throughout the month, said Pardo,
who is now CEO of Video Clips Inc. Users will have the chance to vote on
things they’d like to know about Simpson, and corresponding video will be
posted on a daily basis. The site will be live throughout the month, after
which Pardo will pen a book – titled “A Promoter's Nightmare" – and
documentary based on the footage.

"It's important to see the raw footage rather than edited or 'bleeped
out' versions that might leak out to TV shows," he added. "That's the only
way Americans will ever be able to see the real O.J. – and judge for
themselves whether he's guilty or not."

GRAVESTONE ERECTED FOR RICK JAMES: Black granite marker set up at cemetery in Buffalo hometown.

*A gravestone was erected for late funk legend Rick James at his
burial place in Buffalo, New York just in time for the second anniversary of
his death on Sunday (Aug. 6).

According to the Buffalo News, the cover photo from his 1981 album
“Street Songs” appears as an etching on the headstone, a black granite
monument located in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The picture shows him in a relaxed
pose, wearing his trademark tight leather pants, a jacket and guitar.

Weighing two tons, the monument stands 4 feet, 9 inches high and has
a 4 foot wide base. James’ ashes are interred at the site.

Born James Ambrose Johnson Jr., the musician died in his sleep on
Aug. 6, 2004 at the age of 54. His family had initially attributed the death
to natural causes, despite the nine different drugs that were found in his
system during an autopsy. After concluding that none of the drugs were found
to be at life-threatening levels, the Los Angeles County Coroner ruled his
death was accidental.

HARDISON, JONES JOIN CAST OF PASADENA’S ‘FENCES’: Pair step into August Wilson play with Bassett and Fishburne.

*Kadeem Hardison and Orlando Jones will join Laurence Fishburne and
Angela Bassett in California’s upcoming Pasadena Playhouse run of August
Wilson's drama Fences.

The 1950-60's Pittsburgh-set drama follows the struggle of a former
Negro League baseball player who now finds himself working as a garbage
collector. Wendell Pierce (“The Boys of Winter”) and Victoria Matthews (“Les
Miserables”) are also in the production.

"This is the kind of incredible cast that a director dreams of and
prays for.  This tremendous group of artists coming together for this
production is a great tribute to August Wilson and a genuine sign of the
deep admiration and devotion that his writing inspires in actors," said the
venue’s artistic director Sheldon Epps, according to Playbill News. "I know
that this is a combination of players who will produce genuine theatrical
fireworks in this beautiful and moving play."

"This is our way of honoring August — and also the brilliant Lloyd
Richards, the director who helped create many of his plays," concluded Epps.

Both playwright Wilson and his longtime collaborator Richards died in
the last year. The revival is slated to begin previews Aug. 25 and open
Sept. 1 for a run scheduled through Oct. 1.

Tickets to Fences at the Pasadena Playhouse (39 South El Molino Ave.,
Pasadena) are available by calling (626) 356-PLAY. For more information,

WHOOPI MAKES NICE WITH RIVALS OPIE & ANTHONY: Actress surprises morning team with unannounced visit.

*Whoopi Goldberg subscribes to the motto “kill ‘em with kindness.”

The actress and host of the Clear Channel-syndicated “Wake Up with
Whoopi” had been hounded by rival jocks Opie and Anthony, whose syndicated
morning show from New York’s WKTU also airs on XM Satellite Radio.

After a week of dissing Whoopi, including calling her the b-word,
telling her to go back to Hollywood and urging their listeners to harass
her, the “Ghost” star showed up at WKTU’s studios unannounced to pay the
morning team a personal visit.

According to the New York Daily News, Opie and Anthony welcomed her
into the studio with open arms and the three sat down for a friendly on-air
chat.

"I'm sorry I called you a b****," Opie said. Later, sensing the end
of their long-running Whoopi-bashing, Opie told Goldberg: "You just took
away all the fun.”

Anthony asked: “Who the hell we gonna rag on now?"

THANDIE NEWTON LOOKING FOR COMIC RELIEF: Also, wardrobe malfunction gives photographers an eye-full.

*British actress Thandie Newton had an embarrassing moment before
photographers recently when a wardrobe malfunction exposed more of her than
she would’ve liked during a red carpet event in London’s fashionable
Mayfair.

"She shrieked when she realized lots of people got a sneaky peak.
She was really embarrassed," The Sun quoted a witness as saying.

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old “Crash” actress has loosened up in a
different way with her latest role opposite Eddie Murphy. After
emotionally-draining turns in “Crash” and in “The Pursuit of Happyness”
opposite Will Smith, Newton couldn’t wait to jump into the comedy, “Norbit,”
which stars the actress as Murphy’s love interest.

"I really needed to do something lighter. I generally play tough
roles that are emotionally hard going,” she said, according to Contact
Music. “I just did this film with Will Smith, and typically the film
lightened up once my character was no longer in it. So doing a film with
Eddie is great, but I half expect the film police to come along and say,
'What are you doing? You're not supposed to be in comedies,' and take me
away."

EUR DVD REVIEW: Manderlay -- Drama Unfolds on Alabama Plantation Where Slavery Never Ended
by Kam Williams

*It is 1933, and by accident some mobsters from Chicago drive up to a
secluded old plantation in Alabama by the name of Manderlay. Rather than
finding a relic of the ante-bellum South, the gangsters make the disturbing
discovery that this is a plantation where slavery never ended.

This is the provocative point of departure of Manderlay, a moving
melodrama with talented cast topped by Danny Glover, Oscar-nominees Lauren Bacall, Willem Dafoe, John Hurt and Chloe Sevigny. Still, the real star of the movie
is Bryce Dallas Howard, as Grace, the conflicted daughter of a Mafia don.
For although her father has a hands-off attitude, the young girl summons up
the gumption to do something about it, stating that, "We whites have
committed an irreparable crime against an entire people," concluding, "We
have a moral obligation" to undo it.

Grace thus serves as the story's social conscience, a cleansing force intent
on confronting America's defining divide. In this capacity, she challenges
the residents of Manderlay to reassess their ingrained beliefs about the
indelibility of the color line. She exhorts the whites to abandon their
ingrained arrogance, while imploring the blacks to shed their equally
deep-seated sense of low-self esteem.

Though ostensibly about events occurring at a mythical mansion in
the Thirties, Manderlay is, nonetheless, an eloquent exploration of present-day
black-white relations. Directed by Lars von Trier who shot the picture on a
shoestring budget in his native Sweden, this minimalist theatrical-style
production rises far above its modest means. Relying on a daring script as
executed by A-list actors, it offers a potentially transformational
experience for any inclined to contemplate an introspective, gut-wrenching
meditation on the intractability of the legacy of slavery.

MUSIC BITS: Janet naked again; Monica’s ‘Me’; Satchmo celebrated; Armèl
outing.

*Janet Jackson’s boobs are out again, this time for the cover of
Vibe magazine. Recalling an earlier Vibe cover with two hands cupping her
breasts from behind, Janet does the covering herself for the new issue,
which features her standing in the ocean with her arm covering up the
essentials. In the article, Jackson again tries to put the Super Bowl
incident to rest. “It's just over and done with. It's old. It's the past.
It's history. I'm onto something new. Everybody got their licks in — those
who wanted to — and it's done," she says. Her new album, "20 Y.O.," is
slated for release Sept. 26. The new Vibe issue hits newsstands on Aug. 15.

*Monica’s long-awaited J Records album, “The Makings of Me,” will
finally be released on Sept. 19.  The follow-up to 2003's platinum-selling
“After the Storm” features the Jermaine Dupri-produced first single,
“"Everytime Tha Beat Drop," featuring fellow ATL-iens Dem Franchize Boyz.
"I've watched Monica, now 24, develop and grow since she was 14," states
Clive Davis, Chairman and CEO, BMG U.S. "She's now at the absolute peak of
her career. Her new album has at least four or five hot singles and she's
setting new styles as a cutting edge trend-maker for the industry." Other
tracks on the album include “Sideline Ho,” “My Everything,” “Hell No”
featuring Twista, “Thanks for Tha Misery” and the Missy Elliott-produced “A
Dozen Roses,” “Gotta Move On” and “Doin’ Me Right.”

*The birthday of jazz legend Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong was
celebrated in his hometown of New Orleans Sunday with a jazz mass at St.
Augustine Catholic Church near the French Quarter. The service began with a
call to prayer for musicians who have not yet made it home following
Hurricane Katrina. "It's terrible right now because all of the musicians are
scattered around the United States," 91-year-old trumpeter Lionel Ferbos,
who had met Armstrong, told Reuters. Morgan Clevenger, founder of the New
Orleans Jazz Legacy Foundation, said the city had begun to appreciate
Armstrong in the last few years but needed to work harder to preserve his
legacy. "I celebrate Louis Armstrong any day of the week," she said.

*Elite City Entertainment introduces Los Angeles to one of
Hollywood’s emerging young talents, Armèl, the artist who co-wrote, sang and
performed the song, “Do You Really Know” in the 2004 film “The Fighting
Temptations.” Armèl will perform songs from his EP “Love 101” on Thursday
(8/08) at the Henry Fonda Theatre/Music Box (6126 Hollywood Blvd.). The show
starts at 9:45 p.m. Celebrities on the guest list include Jimmy Jam, Terry
Lewis, Nicole Richie, Gabrielle Union, Tyrese, Paris Hilton, Raven Simone,
Wendy Raquel Robinson, Nautica de la Cruz, Omarion, Marques Houston, David
Hollister, Kenny Latimore, Chante Moore, Tank, Spinderella and Tammi Mac.

FILM/TV BITS:  Foxx wants black Bond; J.Lo’s ‘Dallas’ drama; Star Jones’
crib; Angelou/Chappelle on Sundance; ‘Love & Suicide.’

*Jamie Foxx hopes that the next James Bond flick will have a black
man in the starring role. The Oscar winning actor, currently in theaters as
Detective Tubbs in “Miami Vice,” tells London’s Sun Online: “Bond has got to
come on up, man. They’ve got to get with the times. It needs oomph right
now. Diddy would have made a good Bond.”

*Jennifer Lopez has not given a reason for her decision to leave the
upcoming film adaptation of “Dallas,” where she was to play Sue Ellen Ewing.
But the New York Post quotes sources who put the blame on a terrible script
and the “less-than-strapping” John Travolta, who will step into the role of
J.R. Ewing immediately following his stint opposite Queen Latifah in the
film “Hairspray.” A source tells the paper: "The script sucks. And John
Travolta? If it had been a man's man like Ed Harris or Tommy Lee Jones . . .
but you don't just go from doing 'Hairspray' to 'Dallas.'”

*After trying to sell her New York penthouse apartment for the past
year and a half, Star Jones Reynolds has reportedly taken the property off
the market. A spokesperson for the New York real estate firm the Corcoran
Group said the condo is "temporarily off the market" for unspecified
reasons. New York Post reporter Braden Keil tells TMZ.com that the firm had
to take the listing down once before, when an Internet gossip site posted it
and it attracted 14,000 hits in one hour.

*Maya Angelou and Dave Chappelle are among the celebrities booked for
the second season of Sundance Channel’s “Iconoclasts.” Executive produced by
Robert Redford, the hour-long series features two artists from different
fields who come together to discuss their creative processes. Chappelle and
Angelou will be featured on the season finale, scheduled to air Nov. 30.
Other participants include Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and surfer Laird
Hamilton (Oct. 26); Russian dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov and chef Alice Waters
(Nov. 2); filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and singer/songwriter Fiona Apple
(Nov. 9); actress Isabella Rossellini and inventor Dean Kamen (Nov. 16); and
Paul Simon and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels (Nov. 23). The
six-part series will air weekly at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

*“Love & Suicide,” the first narrative-feature film shot in Cuba in
47 years,  opens in Miami, FL courtesy of AMC Theaters. The movie is the
first independent multi-cultural, bilingual, crossover film to hit the big
screen with a major theatre chain. Award winning filmmakers Luis Moro and
Lisa France wrote the love story that follows Tomas (Kamar de los Reyes) and
Nina (Daisy McCrackin) as they’re guided through Havana by Cuban taxi driver
Alberto (Moro).  In this journey, Tomas discovers the one thing between love
and suicide. “Every screening we’ve done has been a success,” said Moro.
“‘Love & Suicide’ is like the now famous ‘March of the Penguins.’ We are
‘The March of the Cubans.’” “Love & Suicide” premieres with special sneak
previews at 11:55 a.m. Aug. 11, 12 and 13 in the AMC Theatre Cocowalk 16
(3015 Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove).  The film opens its full run the
following week. Check www.AMCTheatres.com for show times or call (305)

SPORTS BITS: Dale Davis arrested; Venus withdraws; Uncle Luke’s NYFL.

*Miami police used a stun gun on Detroit Pistons center Dale Davis
then arrested him for threatening police and security guards, reports the
Associated Press. Security workers called police to a Miami Beach hotel when
Davis refused repeated requests to leave, according to the report. After
giving responding officers his ID, Dale accused them of targeting him
because he is black. When officers asked the NBA star to remove his hands
from his pockets for officer safety, Davis complied – but only after asking
officers if they were going to shoot him. Davis pulled out money, three
cellular phones and credit cards. He put the items back in his pockets and
said he'd beat up the officers if they didn’t have their badges and guns.
Davis then balled his fists and began walking toward officers in an
aggressive manner. He was warned that he would be hit with a Taser gun if he
continued. He didn't stop, and an officer used the stun gun to hit Davis in
the chest, causing him to fall to the ground. He was taken into custody and
charged with assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting
arrest without violence. Chubby Wells, Davis' agent, said he plans to sue
the police for their treatment of the 15-year NBA veteran. "It was so
ridiculous, it's unbelievable," Wells said. "We're going to take a stand."

*Venus Williams withdrew Friday from next week's JPMorgan Chase Open
due to a left wrist injury that has sidelined her since Wimbledon. "I regret
not having the opportunity to compete in Los Angeles where so many of my
friends and fans live," she said. "I am in the process of getting treatment
and hope to be back on Tour in the very near future." Williams, currently
ranked No. 32, also withdrew from this week's Acura Classic in Carlsbad.
Both Venus and Serena are entered in the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 28 in
New York.

*Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell announced the kick off to his first
annual National Youth Football League (NYFL), which will run from August 18
– October 26 for boys ages 5-15 in South Florida.  The program was developed
in conjunction with the Orange Bowl Football Youth League (OBFYL) to teach
the youth of both Dade and Broward counties to achieve academic excellence
both on and off the field. “It’s exciting to team up with the Orange Bowl
Youth Football League to create a program to help area youth”, says
Campbell.  “The NYFL is designed to create both athletes and scholars by
teaching discipline through sports and the importance of education.” For
