MALACO MUSIC GROUP HONORED: International Black Broadcasters Association bestows 'The Gospel Label of The Year' on company(August 11, 2006)
Last weekend at the 6th Annual International Black Broadcasters Association Convention Awards Dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans, LA, Malaco Records was honored with The Gospel Label Of The Year Award. Accepting the award on behalf of Malaco was its Executive Director - Gospel Division, D.A. Johnson and its National Director of Urban Promotions, Mr. Noble Womble, who won the IBBA Survivor Award for his 42 years in the music industry.
Also in attendance and award recipients were New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin who received The IBBA Leadership Award and Mr. Charles Evers (Brother Of Medgar Evers for The IBBA Civil Rights Award. Live entertainment was provided by Malcolm Jamal Warner (Bill Cosby Show) & Lenny Williams (who penned the hit “I Love You” when he was with the legendary band Tower Of Power). After 42 years in the music industry (and as a Caucasian who dedicated his entire career to promoting Black music), Mr. Womble has seen it all and fondly recalled memories from days gone by in his acceptance speech. "I am very grateful to have received this prestigious award. I have worked with some of the biggest Rap groups and R&B groups in the industry. Artists like Howard Hewitt, Anita Baker, Betty Wright and also some of the biggest Rap artists in the country. Groups like Run DMC, Ice Cube, Luther Campbell, Eric "Easy E" Wright and many more. What a great time. In early 1997 the distribution company that I was working for, Big State, filed for bankruptcy. That's when Stewart Madison and Tommy Couch Sr. called me to come to work for Malaco Inc. This was in the summer of 1997 until the present," Mr. Womble said. "I have worked with people like Johnny Taylor, Tyrone Davis, Bobby Bland just to mention a few. I am very blessed to be part of an industry where you can have so much fun and get to see all parts of the country. There is a lot of information I have left out. I really wished I could tell some of those stories because some of them will give you a better understanding of how much fun we really had." (Source: ESPPR)
