*Last year, Bank of Jamaica was supposed to issue 1000 commemorative Bob Marley coins to celebrate what would’ve been the reggae legend’s 60th birthday, but because of an unexplained delay, those coins are being released now.

Produced by the British Royal Mint, the gold and silver ducats feature the late artist’s dreadlocked likeness and are being sold for $100 each, bank spokeswoman Jacqueline Morgan said Wednesday.

"We've received quite a bit of interest already," Morgan said, according to the AP.

In 1995, Bank of Jamaica issued coins bearing Marley's likeness to commemorate his 50th birthday, but those “have totally sold out," Morgan said.

Marley, who died of cancer in Miami at age 36 in 1981, was born in Jamaica's rural St. Ann parish and was raised in the tough shantytowns of Kingston to record such global anthems as "No Woman No Cry" and "I Shot the Sheriff." His lyrics promoting "one love" and social revolution made him an icon in developing countries worldwide.
