MORE TROUBLE FOR FOXY BROWN: Rapper allegedly stole two $400 belts from Greenwich Village boutique; manicurist trial begins today.
*One day after missing a court date in New Jersey last week, rapper Foxy Brown allegedly pulled an Oprah Winfrey and Winona Ryder at a Greenwich Village boutique by demanding entry after hours and then shoplifting two $400 belts.
According to the New York Post, authorities say the artist, whose real name is Inga Marchand, showed up at L’impasse late Thursday and demanded to be let in after the store was closed. Her intent was to pick up lingerie that had been left for alterations, but upon hearing that her pieces weren’t ready, she went off.
Surveillance videos showed her screaming, cursing at the clerk and flailing her arms like a wild woman, the Post reported. The store’s owner, Tony Khayat, said he’s seen Brown act a fool in his store before with "diva behavior," but "this one takes the cake."
A long-term client of the store, Brown noticed a gold rhinestone belt in the midst of her alleged tantrum and inquired about the cost. After haggling with the clerk over its price, she simply shoved the belt in her bag and then grabbed another belt before storming out without paying, the Post said.
The incident occurred less than 24 hours before she skipped a date in Jersey City Municipal Court on charges that she made "terroristic-type threats" against her former personal assistant.
Rasheeda Ellis, a former consultant to Brown's management company, quit the post in June and claims the rapper harassed her through e-mails and cell phone calls during attempts to collect her final paycheck. After Judge Cynthia D. Jackson informed Brown’s team that the artist should attend the next court date – a probable cause hearing scheduled for Sept. 26 – Brown's lawyer, Brian J. Neary, assured the court that her client would be present.
In the meantime, Brown is due in Manhattan Criminal Court today on assault charges stemming from the August 2004 attack on manicurists in a West 23rd St. salon. Accused of punching and kicking two workers at the Chelsea salon Bloomie Nails, and throwing her cell phone at one of them, Brown has denied all charges and refused to accept a plea bargain last year. Her attorney, Robert Kalina, is still hoping to resolve the matter with a deal.
"I hope to see a resolution," he said Friday.
A worker at Bloomie Nails described the incident last week to the New York Daily News, stating: "It wasn't about money or anything. She wanted a manicure, and she paid for that. But we were about to close, and she decided she wanted a pedicure, too. We said we couldn't do it, and she started arguing."
