*It was a tame night at Radio City Music Hall in New York where this year's MTV Video Music Awards were held last night.

Besides a crazed man trying to steal his 5 minutes by grabbing the mic from band Panic! at the Disco and ranting about MTV never giving him a show, and a few house pets (Monica's "large black dog" and band Fall Out Boy's Peter Wentz's small black and white monkey) being forced to endure the show, the typically 'choc ful o' shocks' production turned out to be a bit of a snoozer.

And to think, This the show were Britney Spears received her first open-mouth, girl on girl smooch in '03.

This year's telecast was hosted by actor Jack Black, who opened with skit dressed as a Moon Man, imitating the silver statuettes in the shape of an astronaut planting a flag that are handed out to the winners.  He had promised to restore the show to its former outrageous self, but...

Lil' Kim

Rap diva and ex-con' Lil' Kim offered her assistance by trading in her breast pastie for an orange jumpsuit and being escorted by two men dressed as prison guards, spoofing her year-long getaway to the big house.

There were no big winners this year (the first dozen major awards went to a dozen different artists), but here are some highlights:

Best male video -- James Blunt for his hit song "You're Beautiful."
Best pop video -- Pink for "Stupid Girls."
Best female video -- Kelly Clarkson of "American Idol," winning her second
year in a row, though she didn't attend.

Best R&B video -- Beyonce Knowles for "Check on It." She did manage to pop a few eyes by performing in a tan trench coat over black vinyl boots and hot pants before picking up her award.

Best rap video -- Chamillionaire
Best hip hop video -- Black Eyed Peas
Best dance video -- Pussycat Dolls.
Best group video -- All-American Rejects.
Best new artist in a video -- Avenged Sevenfold.

Shakira and Red Hot Chili Peppers were nominated for seven awards each, but both artists walked away with only one (choreography and art direction).

Madonna made the honorable mention list, being nominated for five awards but walking away with zilch.
