The late Steve Irwin, 'The Crododile Hunter,' shown with a baby tiger *Steve Irwin, the Australian television personality known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns. He was 44. While shooting a segment for a series called “Ocean's Deadliest,” a stingray jabbed one of its poisonous barbs into Irwin’s chest and “put a hole into his heart,” said his friend and colleague John Stainton. When a stingray is frightened by people swimming too close, it uses its serrated, toxin-loaded barb, or spine, which can measure up to 25 centimeters long. The sting can be excruciatingly painful but is rarely fatal, said University of Queensland marine neuroscientist Shaun Collin. Irwin is survived by his American-born wife Terri, from Eugene, Ore., their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and 2-year-old son Bob.
