GORDON TAPS PEELER & WHITE AS NEW NATIONAL DIRECTORS: Major membership increase is aim of veteran Association workers(September 12, 2006)
Monday, NAACP President and CEO Bruce S. Gordon announced changes to his leadership team, furthering his commitment to boost NAACP membership. Mary L. Peeler was appointed National Membership Field Director while Rev. Charles L. White Jr. was selected as National Director of Field Operations. In her new capacity, Peeler is responsible for the development and implementation of organized campaigns with branches to increase overall membership in the Association. "This kind of initiative is critical if we are serious about growing our membership base to one million by 2009," said Gordon. "We need to offer direct support and training to our field sales force which is responsible for bringing in more than 80 percent of our members. This is a sound investment in the NAACP and Mary Peeler is uniquely qualified to take the lead based on her varied experience and many years of outstanding service to the NAACP." Peeler, a native of Gaffney, SC, is immediate past Director of Branch and Field Services. In her 28-year affiliation with the NAACP she's also served as the National Director of Voter Empowerment, the Southeast Regional Voter Empowerment Coordinator, and the Executive Director of the North Carolina State Conference. Peeler is also a recipient of the coveted National NAACP Medgar Wiley Evers Award presented to a staff member for outstanding service. White's new duties will include oversight of field operations, unit administration, and supervision of NAACP field staff. White's other NAACP experiences include Southeast Region Youth Field Director and president of the South Carolina State Conference's Youth and College Division. White, immediate past Director of the Southeast Region (the largest of the seven NAACP regions), is a Hollywood, SC native. "Charles has been a trendsetter in NAACP field operations work," Gordon added. "He is a master organizer and innovative leader. He is the right person for the job." Andrea Brown Gee, former NAACP Prison Project Coordinator, will assume the role of National Deputy Director of Field Operations. The appointments are effectively immediately. Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors. ### source: Speak Out
