The youth camp in Devil’s Lake, N.D. that was the evangelical training ground for tomorrow’s “Christian Soldiers” has surrendered to bad press. Months after the film “Jesus Camp” was released, the real camp featured in the flick has been vandalized and Camp Director, Becky Fischer has received a flood of disapproving e-mails.

A Christianity Today report indicates that the owner of the campground asked Fischer (who was renting the facility) not to continue after $1500 worth of damage to the campground in October.

“Jesus Camp,” rated PG-13, is 84-minutes of intense indoctrination.  In the film Fisher militantly instructs 10 year olds to pray to a life-sized cardboard photo of President Bush, speak in tongues on demand, and cry out to God to save unborn babies from abortion.  The charismatic camp was condemned for being politically motivated and a part of the conservative movement brewing in Evangelicalism. Some have accused Fisher of brainwashing the youth.

Fischer is not baking down. She sees her approach as “good Christianity” and will continue to minister her message at conferences on the East and West Coast. However, she says the political slant on the film was not deliberate.

"This is my scream to the church," she says. "You've got to pay attention to what you're doing or not doing to the kids, because we're losing them from the church."

Former Pastor Ted Haggard also taking a stand for God’s Army in the movie and spoke about homosexuality, among other things.

"We don't have to debate about what we should think about homosexual activity; It's written in the Bible," Haggard tells the New Life Church congregants.

Haggard recently stepped down as the President of the National Association of Evangelicals and was ousted from New Life Church after being exposed for infidelity and “immoral sexual conduct” with a male prostitute.

After its release Haggard himself became a critic of the film saying it was misleading, comparing it to Fahrenheit 911 and The Blair Witch Project.

Other Christian camp administrators are hoping their work won’t become stereotyped based on the negative attention for Jesus Camp.
