*Actor Michael Richards is in full damage control mode after his racist episode at a comedy club in West Hollywood.

After announcing last week that he hired PR specialist Howard Rubenstein and would seek the counsel of “black leaders” to discuss his issues, the “Seinfeld” star showed up as a guest on Jesse Jackson’s nationally syndicated radio program “Keep Hope Alive” to apologize.

Richards said he was baffled by his racist comments toward two African American hecklers during his set at the Laugh Factory last week because he had never used that kind of language before.

"That's why I'm shattered by it,” he told Jackson during the Sunday broadcast, according to AP. “The way this came through me was like a freight train. After it was over, when I went to look for them, they had gone. And I've tried to meet them, to talk to them, to get some healing." You can HEAR the interview HERE.

The two so-called hecklers, Frank McBride and Kyle Doss, recently appeared with their attorney Gloria Allred on NBC’s “Today Show” to discuss the racist rant and float the idea of a lawsuit against Richards. (See video below)

The two say they were merely ordering drinks after arriving late to the comedy club, and not heckling Richards as reports have suggested.  Both have refused to accept Richards' apology, with Doss telling “The Today Show’s” Matt Lauer: “No, I think that apology was totally fake; it was forced. I feel like that was a career move. It wasn’t sincere.” (See video below.)

The Rev. Al Sharpton told CNN Wednesday that he also refuses to accept Richards’ apology, but he did agree to meet with the actor to begin dialoguing about racism in America.

"I [told Richards] you need to sit down and deal with this," Sharpton told CNN. "This is not about accepting an apology, this is about starting a process to really deal with the continual problem of racism in this country."

Richards told Jackson that the N-word he used during the tirade is frequent in the entertainment industry, and acknowledged its use could have consequences.

"I fear that young whites will think it's cool to go around and use that word because they see very cool people in the show business using that word so freely," he said. "Perhaps that's what came through in that ... the vernacular is so accessible."

Jackson called Richards’ rant “a public meltdown” and proof that the actor needs psychiatric help.

“I asked him, 'Why do you hate blacks? Have you been robbed or accosted or molested in some way?'" Jackson said. "He said, 'No, I can't quite explain it.' I said, 'That's why you need to talk it out.'"

Rubenstein confirmed Saturday that Richards is undergoing psychiatric counseling in Los Angeles to deal with his anger issues and the root of his racist tirade.

"He acknowledged that his statements were harmful and opened a terrible racial wound in our nation," Rubenstein said. "He pledges never ever to say anything like that again. He's quite remorseful."

Meanwhile, media outlets have been bum-rushing black celebrities for comments and reaction to the Richards rant.

"I think he needs to stay home for at least a year, because he pissed a lot of people off,” singer Tyrese told reporters backstage at the American Music Awards last week in Los Angeles. “If he loves his face, he should stay home. For real, because somebody’s gonna get a hold of him and they won’t be on camera, and he won’t be having a good time.”

When a reporter asked Jamie Foxx to comment during his backstage interviews, he replied: “Don’t even ruin my vibe right now. Just as a person, if I was in the audience, I would’ve went on stage and just took the mic from him and said, ‘Yo, you need to take a nap, because there’s a lot of things going on inside you.’”

“I made some comments about it just as a comic, like ‘Yo, I would’ve whupped him on sight,’” Foxx continued. “But at the same time, it’s sad to see a person build such a career like that and to have it torn down because of some things that he was going through, because everybody loved his character. Eventually, I’m sure some type of way he’ll come back in, but it’s sad to see him come out so ugly like that.”
