*Armed with $20,000 in financial aid waiting to bless college freshmen in need, Grammy-winner Alicia Keys says she wants to help out college students who make a point to help others.

The singer announced Saturday that recipients of her merit-based Open Door Scholarships will have to perform community service each semester in their hometowns. The winners are also expected to represent the Open Door organization – part of Jacksonville-based nonprofit Frum Tha Ground Up started by Keys' road manager, D.J. Walton – at various school appearances.

"It's a reward for students . . . who contribute to make this a better world," Keys said Friday during an announcement. "We can do something to help find those bright minds that need a helping hand. It all adds up."

Keys, a native of New York’s Hell's Kitchen, got the idea for the scholarships while visiting schools during her 2005 tour. A $5,000 grant will be awarded to each of the lucky four chosen from Jacksonville, New Orleans, Atlanta and Keys’ Harlem, NY neighborhood.

"We're just looking for standout students who are definitely college-bound and need a little bit of help financially to really achieve their dreams," Keys said.
