BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION BITS: ‘Stand and Deliver’ concert; Charlotte best for blacks; Verizon partnership; ‘One Night Only.’(February 20, 2007)
*Black Entertainment Television and Cox Cable are joining forces to present “Stand and Deliver,” a block party and rebuilding fund designed to help New Orleans-based black colleges ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The private concert, hosted by 106 & Park” hosts Rocsi and Terrence, will take place Sunday (Feb. 25) at the legendary Howlin’ Wolf (907 South Peters Street in New Orleans) and feature such guests as UNK, Dro, Lloyd, Lil Scrappy and others. Tickets are available exclusively for students of Dillard, Southern and Xavier Universities. Others who would like to see the event can catch it online at www.bet.com, and portions of the concert will be available to Cox Digital Cable subscribers through On Demand. Donations to the Stand and Deliver Building Fund can be made through http://www.bet.com. *BET.com has announced the results of a multi-city research project to determine the Best Cities in America for Black Families. Taking the No. 1 spot is Charlotte, NC, followed by 2001 winner Columbus, Ohio in second place and Washington, D.C. in third. Charlotte proved to be a city where black families can settle in communities of educated, well-paid African Americans, of whom 50% own their own houses. Amenities such as pro basketball and football teams, a thriving nightlife and the nearby location of world-class colleges and universities, including the historically black Johnson C. Smith University, make it a magnet for black young professionals who are enticed by the gentle climate as well as the relatively low cost of living and affordable housing prices. Research showed the Worst City for Black Americans was Cleveland, Ohio. To find out how each of the 22 cities ranked and for more information on the findings and details on the report, please log onto http://www.BET.com. *Verizon Wireless and BET Networks have teamed up to bring mobile versions of popular BET programs to Verizon subscribers. Video clips form such BET shows as "106 & Park," "American Gangster," "College Hill," "BET's Comic View," and various music specials and new programs are now available on Verizon's VCast video service. The content is part of the VCast VPak $15 monthly subscription. *“One Night Only,” a reality docu-soap that follows a group of high school kids and their drama teacher in New Orleans as they race to mount the play “Dreamgirls,” presents the last two episodes of the season. Jennifer Hudson, an Academy Award nominee for her role in the “Dreamgirls” film, is featured in tonight’s episode 5. • Episode 5 – Effie meets Effie: (Tonight (Feb. 20), 7:30 p.m. ET/PT) Everyone knows the show-stopping number in “Dreamgirls” is "And I Am Telling You," including Chrishira. What's missing from her rendition is emotion; the kind of emotion that brings an audience to their feet. When George realizes this is crucial to this play's success, he brings in an expert to help Chrissy: Jennifer Hudson from the award-winning film adaptation. From one Effie to another, Jennifer helps Chrissy to find the raw emotion so necessary in her performance. • Episode 6 – Opening Night: (Tues., Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m. ET/PT) Stress and angst are everywhere as we near the curtain time. Make-up, wardrobe, lines, marks … everything is in play as we count down to show time. Will the play go off without a hitch? Will Jasmine hit her note? Are the guys ready for their first production? Are Deri’Andra and Tracci nervous? Can Chrishira bring down the house? And will the band ruin the entire performance? SHOW ENCORES: Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ET/PT; Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. ET/PT Speak Out
