MAGAZINE STAND: Kanye West re-launches fashion column in Complex; Mother of Jay-Z’s rumored love child in Hip Hop Weekly.(April 4, 2007)
*After a two-year hiatus, Kanye West returns to Complex as a writer for the magazine's Fashion Beatdowns column, which debuts in the April/May issue on newsstands Tuesday. The column features Kanye's take on four celebrity looks along with his view of today's fashion trends. West first penned the column in the magazine's February/March 2004 issue, and kept it going until the end of 2005. Here are some excerpts:
On all-over print hoodies: • "Hoodies, hoodies, and more hoodies--how many more streetwear lines can we take? They say hip-hop is dead, and in that argument, people always give props to the originators. In the fashion world, we'd say, let's give props to Supreme and Stussy. And you gotta give Bape props. People say the concept of being cool should be anti-the-establishment. The reason why people dis Bape is because they are so big that now they are the establishment. Like Gnarls Barkley now isn't the same as when people were just emailing the song. (Side note: I can and can't believe that Gnarls Barkley didn't win the Grammys). On Grey Jeans: • "Grey jeans are the end-all, be-all right now," he says. "Dior pants in general--last year, Dior annihilated the game. Not that they're new, but my favorite designers are Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela and Alexander McQueen. They're incredible if you have a surplus of money, but to me the true geniuses of fashion are people like Curtains (the Brooklyn rapper), Chris Julian (owner of Fruition in Vegas), and of course, Taz Arnold of Sa-Ra. Those three are at the forefront because they mix-and-match vintage and archive pieces to develop their own new styles." *This week's issue of Hip Hop Weekly delivers an exclusive interview with Jay-Z's ex, Trinidadian video model Shenelle Scott, and the exclusive pictures of her son, 5-year-old Isa Jael Sayeed, who is rumored to be Jay-Z's son. In the interview Shenelle tells us how she met Jay Z and about their one year relationship. Hip Hop Weekly reports from the Miss USA Pageant in Los Angeles, Shaquille O’Neal’s 35th Birthday Bash in Hollywood, Fla and BET’s Spring Bling. Also, Russell Simmons talks about his new book “Do You! 12 Laws to Access the Power in You to Achieve Happiness and Success,” and Musiq Soulchild discusses his new CD “LuvanMusiq.” In addition, check out Wish Bone’s 2007 Mercedes Benz S550 in “310 Whips” and hot celebrity couples gossip in “Couples 411.” Founded by Dave Mays and Raymond “Benzino” Scott, HHW is now published every two weeks in its new glossy format and is available nationally at stores such as Barnes & Noble, 7Eleven, Walgreen’s, Rite Aid, Kmart, Pathmark and Walmart, as well as airport magazine retailers and magazine outlets in the UK and Canada.
