SPORTS BITS: Venus loses, Blake wins in separate tournaments; Baron Davis & Paul Pierce on ‘Ballers.’(May 24, 2007)
*Venus Williams failed to reach the quarterfinals at the Istanbul Cup on Wednesday, losing to Aravane Rezai 6-4, 6-4. The tournament is considered a tuneup for the French Open, a Grand Slam event which begins Sunday. "I haven't played at any Grand Slams this year, but that will be a great place to start," said Williams, who missed this year's Australia Open because of injury. *James Blake rallied to beat Agustin Calleri 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 Tuesday at the ATP World Team Championship to even the U.S.-Argentina tie. "It was a great feeling, closing out both sets the way I did, battling back from a tough first set where all the breaks seemed to always be going his way and he was playing great tennis," said Blake, who lost to Fernando Gonzalez in the United States' 2-1 loss to Chile on Monday. "That's something I'm proud of, to keep my head held high and go about my business and not completely panic." Chile improved to 2-0 while Sweden fell to the bottom with its second loss in as many ties. The Americans and Argentines are tied for second with a 1-1 record. *NBA All-Stars Baron Davis and Paul Pierce will be guests on the May 29th episode of BET’s “Ballers.” The athletes will discuss LA Stars, their charitable events group with Gilbert Arenas that raises funds to improve the lifestyles, communities and opportunities for Los Angeles-based youth and their families. This year's LA Stars event is slated for August 3-5. It includes a VIP gala on the 200 block of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, a Legacy Project Day of Service in LA, a Carnival focused on Healthy Living with a special Urban X-Games exhibition, and an NBA-sanctioned game and Celebrity game at USC's new Galen Center.
