MARIAH TO SPOOF HERSELF IN SPIKE LEE SHORT: ‘Lovers & Haters’ makes fun of singer’s rise to fame.(May 31, 2007)
*On the heels of her role in the feature film “Tennessee,” singer-actress Mariah Carey has been cast in a new short from filmmaker Spike Lee that aims to spoof her life and times. “Lovers & Haters,” a 15-minute short budgeted at $5 million, will show Carey dealing with fans and critics alike who have entered her space as she rises to superstardom. The project comes in the wake of similar Spike Lee-directed vignettes starring Carey that were featured as part of her 2006 tour “The Adventures of Mimi.” Lee’s 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks is producing the comedy short, while Carey and Benny Medina serve as executive producers. Newcomer Kali Hawk, who recently starred as a waitress opposite Todd Bridges in the BMW Film Festival hit “Issues,” stars opposite Mariah in “Lovers & Haters.” The release date has been scheduled for Sept. 16.
