SHONDA RHIMES ON LOSING ISAIAH: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator says Dr. Burke will not be played by a replacement actor.(June 18, 2007)
*Shonda Rhimes, the creator of ABC’s hit drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” tells “Access Hollywood” that she has no plans to pull a soap opera move and cast another actor in the role of Dr. Burke, which had been played by Isaiah Washington until his recent firing. “I’ve said it before, and I will say it again. I don’t believe in replacing one actor with another,” she said. “I think (a replacement is) a little bit odd in terms of somebody who has been on the show for three years.” Rhimes also doesn’t believe in cowering to public scrutiny about the tabloid coverage that has followed the series ever since Washington uttered a gay slur on the set in October. “I think there have been things that have happened that have been within the family that stay within the family,” Rhimes told “Access’” Shaun Robinson at the Crystal + Lucy Awards honoring Women in Film. “I don’t want to read the tabloids,” she added, “and I feel like we wrote the show in a way that really completes the story of (Washington’s character) Burke, and that is a really strong thing.” In other Washington news, the actor told Entertainment Weekly that he would be willing to return to “Grey’s Anatomy” for a cameo should Rhimes ever want that to happen. "Dr. Burke (his character) is probably the greatest challenge I've ever had. I've studied the medical world extensively. I gave it everything I had,” he said. "If Shonda calls me and says, 'Look, we want you to do something for Grey's Anatomy,' I probably would not hesitate. But I don't really see that happening." Speak Out
