Dr. Dennis Waters is extending a healing hand to African-American men who suffered physical or sexual abuse before they even reached puberty.
"Traditionally, attention has been focused on women, particularly those of European ancestry, being victims of sexual abuse," said Waters. "I was physically and sexually abused as a preteen, but I was healed and made whole through Jesus Christ. I want to provide other African-American men with help and healing techniques for overcoming the remaining residual effects associated with this painful and traumatic experience of life."
Waters' new book, "I Will Restore: A Ministry of Restoration Model to Facilitate the Help and Healing of African American Male Adult Survivors of Prepubescent Physical and Sexual Abuse," examines the role of the church in helping African-American men surmount the consequences of prepubescent physical or sexual abuse (PPSA).
The book identifies an array of church tools, techniques, principles, concepts, and beliefs, collectively called the Restoration Ministry Model (RMM), that support the healing process. The RMM is a theological prism that allows the victim-survivor to perceive God's awareness of him and his special situation.
"The recent announcement that Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles is settling with more than 500 alleged victims of clergy sex abuse highlights how pervasive childhood abuse is," said Waters. "Reports show that, depending on the definition used, up to 62 percent of children worldwide are victims of child sexual abuse (CSA). In the United States alone, one out of every six young men has been a victim. That's nearly 2 million African-American men."
