MUSIC BITS: McDonald’s drops Twista; Jay-Z still at Def Jam; Thelma Houston returns; Cool & Dre’s deal; Diddy snubbed.(July 30, 2007)
*Rapper Twista has been dropped from the McDonald's live 10-city tour because of his lyrical content, the fast food chain announced Saturday. “Although we respect free speech and artistic expression, we do not condone or perpetuate derogatory language," McDonald’s said in a statement. The Chicago artist was to perform Aug. 7 in his hometown. The free tour, to be held in McDonald's parking lots across the U.S., also features Ne-Yo, Kenna, Kat DeLuna, the Dey, Single File and Kevin Michael in various markets. *Jay-Z says he’s “nowhere near” a move from Def Jam to Columbia, as reports suggested last week. Speaking via phone to New York DJ Angie Martinez, Jigga said he would be at his Def Jam gig this week as usual, "if they don't kick me out the building.” As for the mogul’s rumored move to Columbia, he said: "I'm always looking at the next move," but added, "I'm nowhere near that. That's the papers, they are ahead of me." *Singer Thelma Houston, best known for her disco classic "Don't Leave Me This Way," has returned with her first studio album in more than 17 years. "A Woman's Touch," due Aug. 14 from Shout Factory, features a gospel-flavored version of Sting's "Brand New Day," a slowed down take on Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar" and her spins on Gaye's “Distant Lover” and Al Green's “Love and Happiness.” She also salutes deceased friend Sylvester with a cover of his "Dance (Disco Heat)/You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." *Production team Cool & Dre has forged a distribution deal between their record label Epidemic Records and Skeleton Key Entertainment/EMI's Imperial Records, reports allhiphop.com. The terms call for Imperial Records to provide promotions, marketing, online marketing and publicity for Misery Loves Company, the forthcoming Epidemic Records release from Miami-born rapper Joe Hound. *The New York Post’s Page Six quotes sources who say Sean “Diddy” Combs and his family were denied a table at the posh St. Tropez hotspot Les Caves Thursday night because he’s no longer considered part of the A-list crowd. "He is so B-List here," said the source. "No one even acknowledges him." The column says he was once a regular fixture at the venue, which he would frequent with a full-time entourage.
