OPRAH PUT ON BLAST BY JAMES FREY’S EDITOR: Woman says host had ‘bad manners’ toward the author.(July 31, 2007)
*The editor and publisher of James Frey’s memoir “A Million Little Pieces” has expressed disdain for the way Oprah Winfrey treated the author during his mea culpa appearance on her talk show. Winfrey had chosen “Pieces” for her book club and initially defended the author when his memoir was found to contain fabricated stories. But once Frey admitted to fictionalizing certain parts of the book, Oprah invited him back on her show and roundly criticized him for the deception. Nan A. Talese, Frey’s editor and publisher who tagged along during his second appearance on the show, has accused Winfrey of "fiercely bad manners" and said she would have done nothing differently in how she handled Frey's manuscript. "I'm afraid I'm unapologetic of the whole thing. And the only person who should be apologetic is Oprah Winfrey," Talese said, speaking at a nonfiction writers' conference in Dallas on Saturday, according to The Dallas Morning News. As for Frey's use of fictitious elements in his account of addiction and recovery, Talese said: "When someone starts out and says, `I have been an alcoholic. I have lied. I have cheated.' ... You do not think this is going to be the New Testament." Speak Out
