REGGAE UPDATES FROM JAMAICA: Jamaican born artistes Elephant Man and Sean Kingston soar to the top of the Billboard Charts

• Jamaican born artistes Elephant Man and Sean Kingston soar to the top of the Billboard Charts

      *Sean Kingston has rocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his smash summer hit Beautiful Girls. The song leaped from number 23 to number 1, bringing an end to the two week reign of Plain White T’s Hey Delilah.

      Over on the Billboard Dance Music Club Play chart, Elephant Man’s collaboration 'Whine Up' featuring Latin hip hop princess Kat Deluna, bullets from number three to number one. Although he is a featured artiste on 'Whine Up,' its clearly Elephant Man’s most successful single to date on the Billboard chart.

      The song which peaked at number 29 a week ago, has slipped to number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.

      Still on the Billboard charts, Korean dancehall deejay Skull soars from 94 to 84 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart with the single Boom Di Boom. The accompanying video clip is rotating heavily on Tempo and locally on RETV.


• Sanjay’s 'Man of My Words' creating waves

      As producer Arif Cooper’s Guardian angel rhythm continues to spew hits, deejay Sanjay is one of the newer acts on the project who seems to be benefiting from the success of the project. 

      Sanjay’s single 'Man of My Words' has been creating waves ever since it hit the airwaves a few months ago. An accompanying music video directed by Kimala Bennett has assisted in the song’s popularity.  The song is currently making strides on local charts.

      The twenty five year old deejay who debuted in 2002 with the single Strictly Physical with Tami Chynn, attended Hillel Academy. He later obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, where he graduated with honors. However, music was what he had in mind. 

      To date Sanjay has collaborated with the likes of Vybz Kartel, Luciano, Cecile, and Aidonia among others. He has been featured on top dancehall beats including the Military, R.A.W. and Wave rhythms. Additionally, he has recorded for producers including Delano Thomas (Renaissance), Christopher Birch, Donovan Bennett (Don Corleon), Steven McGregor, Michael ‘Liquid’ Brissett and Michael Bennett.

      'Man of My Words' according to Sanjay was written based on a personal experience. ‘I had a disagreement with someone in the music business and I decided to write about it. So I was basically venting to myself and saying I will be a man of my words’, Sanjay explained.

      Sanjay’s latest single is called 'Lonely' and it is featured on the Renaissance label’s Legal rhythm.


• Tami Chynn working on various tracks

      Singer Tami Chynn is busy in the studios churning out various singles. You can catch her on the Big Ship label’s 2000 and 70’s rhythm with her song 'Rolling,' while on the Renaissance label’s latest one drop project, Tami has recorded the song which is called Legal.

      Additionally, Tami says she will be doing some work with producers in New York and Los Angeles for her upcoming album.


• Irie Jamboree marks five years with impressive lineup

      New York’s biggest reggae and dancehall stage show, Irie Jamboree, was launched recently at the Asylum nightclub. The show which is in its 5th year, is promoted by New York reggae radio station Irie Jam Radio. 

      The show will take place on Sunday September 2 at the Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York. Among the artistes scheduled to perform are Steven Marley, Luciano, Anthony B, Morgan Heritage, Etana, Pressure, Munga, Mr. Vegas, Tony Matterhorn, Assassin, Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Mr. Easy, Da’Ville and Jovi Rockwell.


• Tanya Stephens gets scholarship from RDI

      Last year the RDI gave dancehall deejay Assassin a scholarship to pursue studies at the University of Sunderland in England. This year’s recipient is dancehall and reggae artiste Tanya Stephens. She will be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at the University of Sunderland. Congratulations Tanya!


• Da’Ville for Independence celebrations in Connecticut

      Singer Da’Ville is jetting off to Canada and the US next weekend. After a successful tour of Europe and a recent performance at Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest, Da’Ville will perform in Canada on August 10. On August 11, he heads to Hartford, Connecticut to participate in Independence Celebrations called Parade Night at the West Indian Social Club.  Da’Ville is currently riding the charts with Give Thanks for What You Got.
