Frankie L. Coleman, the wife of Columbus, Ohio's first African American Mayor Michael Coleman, avoided jail last week after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to receiving pay for hours she did not actually work at a state development job. Instead, Judge Harlan Hale gave Coleman five years probation and a $1,000 fine. A 360-day jail sentence was suspended. Mrs. Coleman, with her husband in the courtroom, apologized for her actions and admitted she was battling an alcohol problem.
Mayor Michael Coleman and Frankie Coleman Coleman's legal problems began last May when it was revealed that her former supervisor had refused to sign her pay sheets charging that Coleman had either arrived to work late or had not shown up at all to her $70,000 a year job.
