FILM/TV BITS: Starz taps 50; ‘Lincoln Heights’ return; USC’s Johnson Communication Leadership Center.(August 27, 2007)
*Rapper 50 Cent will team with the cable network Starz next month to promote the Sept. 11th release of his new album, “Curtis.” Beginning Sept. 7 at 9 p.m., Starz Edge will feature the artist in “50’s Picks,” a four night programming event featuring films selected and hosted by 50 Cent, including The Professional, Rush Hour, Carlito’s Way and He Got Game. Premiering Sept. 7 at 11 p.m. on Starz InBlack is “50 on 50,” an original 30-minute video show hosted by the rapper and his G-Unit cohort, Tony Yayo. Together, they discuss music and introduce a variety of music videos, including three from “Curtis” – “Straight to the Bank,” “I Get Money,” and “Ayo Technology” featuring Justin Timberlake. *The ABC Family Channel drama “Lincoln Heights” returns for its second season on Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. The show stars Russell Hornsby as Eddie Sutton, a dedicated police officer who moves with his wife and kids from the suburbs to his inner-city hometown to serve. This season, Eddie finds himself homebound after an injury in the line of duty, while his wife Jenn leaves the hospital to work in the local clinic to help her community. Cassie and Charles are back to school and their romance heats up after being on hold for the summer while she was away at art camp. Tay and Lizzie continue to find their way as pre-teens dealing with peer pressure. *Linda Johnson Rice, president and chief executive officer of Johnson Publishing Company Inc., has announced a pledge of pledged $2.5 million to create an innovative new program to support young journalism and communication students in the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. The Johnson Communication Leadership Center will have a new undergraduate scholarship program that focuses on the specific interests of the African-American community. In addition to the Johnson Scholarships, the center will engage in significant scholarly activities designed to advance knowledge on the role of African-Americans in the media. Enrolling in fall 2007, the inaugural Johnson Scholars are Anita Little, a print journalism major from Fort Worth, Texas, and Leigh Lockhart, a communication major from North Hollywood, Calif.
