EDDIE GRIFFIN CUT SHORT AT BLACK ENTERPRISE EVENT: Comic thought it was safe to use the N-word during stand-up routine.(September 6, 2007)
*Eddie Griffin should’ve known that his use of the N-word wouldn’t fly in an audience filled with people who would rather it be removed from the English language entirely. During an event hosted by Black Enterprise last weekend, the comedian gave folks a healthy dose of the epithet during his stand-up routine. However, the mostly-African American crowd – including one of the word’s biggest critics, Al Sharpton – was apparently more than uncomfortable with its repeated use. Griffin’s microphone was cut in the middle of his act, and Black Enterprise founder/publisher Earl Graves stormed onto the stage to address the crowd. “We ... will not allow our culture to go backwards,” he reportedly said. “We will pay Mr. Griffin all that we owe him but we will not allow him to finish the show if that's the way he's going to talk." Graves’ words were met with a standing ovation, reports the NY Daily News, who also said Rev. Sharpton lauded Graves’ stand during a speech the following day. Meanwhile, Griffin attempted to have the last word. In his inimitable style he walked onto the stage smoking a cigarette and yelled "F--- y'all!" before walking off, according to sources.
