SURVEYS SHOW OBAMA & CLINTON SPLITTING BLACK VOTE; But Obama Has More Work to Do.
Most national polls are suggesting that African Americans are pretty evenly split between New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama as to the candidate they want to win the Democratic Party's nomination for president.
Nevertheless, most seasoned political observers are saying the onus is on Obama to increase his support among Blacks if he is to cut into Clinton's current 20-point lead in the polls.
In addition, questions are being raised about the polls themselves since few of them survey just Blacks. One poll which did question only Blacks was conducted by Winthrop University in South Carolina.
The poll found that Clinton was leading Obama by 35 percent to 31 percent among that state's African American voters. Other polls suggest a similar split.
How can Obama close in on Clinton's lead? Few observers appear to have the answer barring some major mis-step by Clinton. Charlie Cook of the Washington, D.C.-based newsletter The Cook Political Report summarized Obama's dilemma recently writing, "As long as she [Hillary Clinton] is doing as well as she's doing in the black community, it's hard to see her losing."
