JAN ADAMS DRAMA CONTINUES: More malpractice suits, ex-girlfriend slapped him with restraining order. Also, is there an Oprah connection?(November 14, 2007)
*TMZ.com has been reporting one case after another of malpractice lawsuits against Dr. Jan Adams, the Harvard-educated plastic surgeon who said he operated on the mother of Kanye West sometime before her death on Saturday. Lori Ufondu alleges in her lawsuit filed in L.A. County Superior Court that during breast lift surgery in 2003, Dr. Adams left a surgical sponge inside of her, which she had to get removed in revision surgery performed by another plastic surgeon. Ufondu claims the sponge and its belated removal caused a distortion in her appearance, creating a deformed right nipple, a puncture wound, loss of sensation and "horrific scar tissue." Following Dr. Adams' surgery, Ufondu says she was feeling "sharp, needle-like pain in the area of this scar tissue." She says she complained to Dr. Adams, who allegedly responded "by laughing in a derisory fashion, claiming that the pain would subside." According to TMZ, Ufondu obtained a judgment in excess of $100,000. Her lawyer says the doctor has yet to pay, and that there are several outstanding judgments against Dr. Adams, who has ignored his obligation to pay. In yet another lawsuit, filed in Orange County Superior Court less than two weeks ago on Halloween, Rhonda McClain accuses Dr. Adams of medical malpractice following a surgery that took place on March 10, 2007. McClain says Dr. Adams and Euclid Outpatient Surgery Center were responsible for "mental, physical and nervous pain and suffering" after a procedure that left her with one breast implant. She also claims she nearly bled to death following the surgery. Additionally, TMZ has obtained documents filed by Dr. Adams' ex-girlfriend, Deborah Pratt, seeking a restraining order against him for his alleged "Jekyll and Hyde" behavior when he drinks alcohol. The papers, filed in L.A. County Superior Court in 2002, say in part: "Defendant has an unfortunate drinking problem and unless restrained immediately, will assert the worst side of his 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality when he is intoxicated." She continues: "Defendant is very attached to my children and he has been abusive when intoxicated in their presence, so he must stay away from them, also." Pratt said on one occasion Adams burst into her home, threatened and chased her in his car. Dr. Adams filed papers denying the allegations, but the judge granted the restraining order. As previously reported, Dr. Adams first became well known as one of the co-hosts on NBC's short-lived "The Other Half," which was promoted as a male version of ABC's "The View" with co-hosts Danny Bonaduce, Mario Lopez and Dick Clark. He also hosted the Discovery Health Channel series "Plastic Surgery: Before and After" and appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to plug the program. "Access Hollywood" quoted an unnamed source Tuesday that said Dr. Adams was one of two cosmetic surgeons recommended to Kanye's mother by Winfrey. A rep for the talk show host has denied the report, stating: "Absolutely untrue. Oprah did not introduce Dr. West to Dr. Adams." • This document (http://www.celebtv.com/FileServer.aspx?FileGuid=cdb4b428-1cc1-4bf1-ac82-e1b6f6332ec1) from the Executive Director of the California Medical Board asks the state to consider revoking or suspending Adams’ physician and surgeon’s certificate in April of this year. • Adams has two DUI arrests in Los Angeles. On March 31, 2006, he was arrested for blowing a .10 blood alcohol level during two breath analyzer tests, which is over the legal limit. Adams was found not guilty for driving under the influence and guilty of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or greater. He was sentenced to 96 hours in L.A. County jail, had to enroll in an alcohol treatment and counseling program and attend 60 AA meetings and five years probation, the papers state. The other DUI is from a case dated January 16, 2003. He pleaded “no contest” to driving under the influence and was placed on three years probation, which included a three-month first offender alcohol and drug education and counseling program and restricted him from driving anywhere but to and from work for 90 days, according to the documents. • Dr. Adams was handed down two malpractice judgments by Los Angeles Superior Court for his medical practice. In August of 2001 he was ordered to pay $250,000 in one claim. In September of 2001, he was ordered to pay $217,337 in another malpractice judgment. California places a cap on non-economic damages for medical malpractice cases at $250,000. • Another malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Adams was filed this year in Orange County Superior Court by Terrie Cage, who claims on June 27 that Adams and another doctor "negligently and carelessly examined, diagnosed, cared for, treated and performed surgery upon plaintiff, failing to follow the standard care ..." As a result, Cage alleges that as a result of her procedure for breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction, she was "rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled." View the lawsuit documents here.
