CHRIS BROWN: A 'CHRISTMAS' STAR: Singer gets his act(ing) together in new film. Also, scroll down to watch our red carpet coverage of 'This Christmas'(November 21, 2007)
*The Whitfield family is coming home for the holidays in the new family film "This Christmas," and like most families, they'll be coming home to drama as well.
The film stars R&B star Chris Brown as Michael "Baby" Whitfield, the baby of the bunch who adds to the family secrets in the comedy, as an aspiring singer. Appropriately, Brown actually is a singer. With a stellar self-titled 2005 debut and the hot follow-up disc "Exclusive," featuring the mega hit single "Kiss, Kiss" rocketing up the charts, Brown is an established music star with his eye on the silver screen. Brown's big screen introduction came with a brief appearance in “Stomp the Yard” early this year. The young star may have been bitten by the acting bug, but according to him, it didn’t just happen. “When kids grow up, they’ve got a lot of acting and charisma already. Just watching TV and tying the cape around their throat, they go running around in their drawers acting like they're superman. They had that with them all the time. It was just about having that with them and I think that I always kept that with me,” he said. “When it came to acting, it was just something that I liked. I just read the lines and act like that’s me – and I guess it works.” What really works is Brown’s singing performances in the film. He does a rendition of not only the holiday classic for which the film is named, but he also sings the soul classic “Try A Little Tenderness.” However, Brown told EUR that he really doesn’t want to have his movie career depend on his music career. “In a movie, I don’t want to show people my musical talents, my entertaining side and the dancing. I want to show people the other side. If I’m going to act, I want to act. I just want to separate it,” he said. “[This movie] showed my singing ability a little bit, but I think it showed me more as an actor. I wouldn’t say, I’m 100% actor, but I think I’m becoming one. I’m getting my feet wet, but I’m a rookie right now.” While Brown has plans to pursue acting, he stated that formal training isn’t currently in the plans. Fortunately for him, he was surrounded by acclaimed actors on the set, such as Loretta Divine, Delroy Lindo, and Regina King. “When you’re young and you play basketball with the older guys, you’re going to adjust to the older guys,” he likened to working with this cast. “This is the same scenario. You’re picking up different tips from them. You watch how they approach their lines and stuff. I’m just learning from them.” Still, he admitted some of the scenes were difficult from him because they were a bit too serious. “I’m a funny guy. I don’t like the confrontation, so I laugh,” he said. “But when I seriously approached this character, it was easy to get that emotion out. It wasn’t too hard because kids always have secrets that that they don’t want their parents and only their homies might know. That was my time to do it onscreen.” In addition, Brown said his role was made easier with the help of Divine who plays the family matriarch. “With Loretta, she’s like everybody’s mom on set, for real,” he said explaining that it reminded him of his own mother. “She’s really motherly. She’s so kind as a person, off-set, not just when the cameras are rolling.” The film also reminded him of Christmases in his own house. “During the holidays, all of us come together, too,” he said. “We have arguments sometimes – not necessarily the fights like in the movie, but we have arguments, everybody does. This movie is finding the significance of a black family during the holidays; what it should be like – everybody coming home and having fun.” Right now, the rising star is having a lot of fun living out some of his biggest dreams. He is becoming a very recognized face thanks to his hits and the paparazzi. As for the Rihanna rumors: “We’re just friends,” he said. “We’re not dating or anything. That’s media; they like juice. I just laugh at it.” “This Christmas,” also stars Mekhi Phifer, Columbus Short, Keith Robinson, and Idris Elba. Opening in theaters everywhere today, it’s just one of the early steps in helping Brown reach his goals – giving him the chance to showcase his vocal talents while growing as an actor. “I just want to be the biggest artist-entertainer. Music is my love first. Not to dis Michael [Jackson], because he’s my idol but I want to be bigger than him or at least the same level as he was in his prime. And on the acting side you’ve got the Johnny Depps, the Denzels and that’s what I aspire to be.” EUR's "This Christmas" coverage on the red carpet with Delroy Lindo and Lauren London:
