RADIO ONE AND XM CALL IT QUITS: Trade mag says the six-year relationship will end next week.(January 3, 2008)
*It's over between Radio One and XM Satellite Radio. Trade magazine Redding News Review is reporting that the two companies will end its more than six-year relationship next week because of advertising woes. Lee Michaels, national program director for Syndication One News/Talk and XM's black-oriented talk Channel 169 The Power, told Redding News Review that the Washington, D.C.-based satellite company will take over programming at Channel 169 on Tuesday. “It has nothing to do with the programming, it has nothing to do with the people that work here,” Michaels said. “It was strictly a business decision.” He said Lanham, Md.-based Radio One had not made a profit on advertising for the joint venture with XM, where the chief focus is selling subscriptions. On-air talent at XM 169 the Power were told of the change in programming during a Friday conference call, Redding reports. Under the new arrangement, all of channel 169's weekend talent and weekday programming after 4 p.m. are scheduled to be suspended, Michaels said. However, Shows featuring Joe Madison and Warren Ballentine will remain on the network until further notice, he added. Another holdover is Al Sharpton, who had protested XM’s handling of Opie and Anthony’s bit about raping Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and had been unaffected by his third party affiliation with XM. He will now be working directly with XM. Radio One has been selling stations in non-core markets and blames "a challenging radio industry environment," for a 40.2 percent decline in third-quarter earnings. Speak Out
