FORMER FASHION MODEL KATOUCHA IS MISSING: Paris police investigate disappearance of 'black princess' after party.(February 11, 2008)
*As of press time Sunday, police in Paris were still searching for 47-year-old Guinean former catwalk model Katoucha Naine, who went missing from her houseboat on a central stretch of the River Seine on the night of Feb. 1, according to relatives. The mother-of-three, nicknamed "The Black Princess," reportedly vanished after being dropped off near her home from a party. The Paris Police Department has started an inquiry into her disappearance. French newspaper Le Figaro is reporting that Katoucha was drunk when friends dropped her off at a houseboat docked next to hers. The former model cannot swim and is also near-sighted, but was not wearing her contact lenses, the paper reported. Her glasses, including her cell phone and credit card, were found in her handbag the next morning by her landlord’s son. A source close to the investigation confirmed to AFP that all motives are being examined, including suicide. Born in Conakry, Katoucha's modeling career soared during the 1980s. She became a muse for designer Yves Saint Laurent before leaving the industry for good in 1994. In recent years she made headlines as an outspoken campaigner against female circumcision, launching a foundation against the practice. She stated in a recent interview: "Today at the age of 47, I want a woman's combat and I have chosen the battle against excision." Excised at the age of nine, in her home country Guinea, Katoucha recounted the ordeal in a recent book entitled "In My Flesh." Speak Out
