'AMERICAN IDOL' FINALIST HAS 'F.A.T.' PAST: Joanne Borgella's road to Top 24 went through Mo'Nique.(February 18, 2008)
*If "American Idol" contestant Joanne Borgella looks a little familiar, chances are you're a fan of the Oxygen competition series "Mo'Nique's Fat Chance," where Borgella was crowned Miss F.A.T. in 2005. Shifting her focus to music, the 25-year-old plus-sized model from Hoboken, N.J. wants to prove through "American Idol" that talent comes in all shapes and sizes. "Because of my size, every producer, everyone I ever met, would say to my parents, 'Your daughter doesn't have the package. She's an amazing singer, but she has to have the look,'" Borgella told the New York Daily News. "Because I've come from such a strong family, I stayed true to myself and just kept at it." As previously reported, the Hofstra University graduate packed up a car and drove with her brothers and sisters to "Idol" auditions in Philadelphia, where she slept outside for two days before performing before the judges. Simon Cowell gave her a "no," but Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson were impressed with her rendition of Celine Dion's "I Love You" enough to send her through to the Hollywood round. "I want to touch lives the way music has touched my life," said Borgella. "And I hope America is happy with what they see."
