TARIKA WILSON UPDATE: White Officer Charged in Shooting Death of the 26-Year-Old Woman.(March 25, 2008)
In a surprise move last week, a White police officer was charged with negligent homicide in the January shooting death of a young Black woman during a botched drug raid in Lima, Ohio. The shooting had set off a series of local demonstrations and brought national attention to the small northwest Ohio city - including a day-long visit by the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The controversy began on January 4th when police raided the home Wilson rented in search of her boyfriend who they suspected of selling drugs out of the house. Somehow (authorities have kept much of their investigation secret) officers ended up shooting and killing 26-year-old Wilson as she stood holding her 14-month-old baby. The baby was also wounded. There was no indication that Wilson had threatened or challenged the officers as they broke into her home. The officer, who actually shot Wilson, Sgt. Joseph Chavalia, has been on paid leave since the shooting. However, a special prosecutor convinced a grand jury to return a negligent homicide indictment against Chavalia.
