ALICIA KEYS EXPLAINS 'CONSPIRACY' REMARKS: Singer tells Ryan Seacrest her gangsta rap theories were 'misinterpreted.'Blender magazine responds to Alicia(April 16, 2008)
*During an appearance on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM radio show Tuesday, Alicia Keys clarified her headline-making remarks about gangster rap that appears in the latest issue of Blender magazine. The 27-year-old described the sub-genre as a government conspiracy designed to "convince black people to kill each other." She also suggested that the government and media were responsible for building animosity between slain rappers Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. Keys told Seacrest that those comments were "misinterpreted." "The term 'gangsta rap' was so over-sloganized during that time," she said, "and in so many ways everyday people as well as the government could have really done so much more to obliterate and eradicate the things that were going on in the community at that time that forced the artists to discuss and talk so strongly what they saw- what they lived with every day." Keys also addressed her comment that the East/West rivalry in hip hop was fueled "by the government and the media to stop another great black leader from existing." "It was just an over-sensationalized situation," she told Seacrest. "We don't know who killed Biggie and Pac. But I do feel like had more communication been done between the two men, that result would have not happened." Calling the attention surrounding her remarks "disappointing," Keys added, "All the things that I try to do to inspire people and it rarely gets nearly this much attention." When contacted by EUR to respond to Alicia's assertion that she was misrepresented, Blender magazine, through a rep stated flatly that they stand by their story.
