EUR EDUCATION UPDATE: Report says blacks closing science achievement gap with whites.(May 8, 2008)
*There was some good news for African American youth on the educational front last week.
The latest results from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Math and Science program not only shows improvement among all elementary and middle school students but also revealed a closing of the achievement gaps between Black and Hispanic students and white students. Whites still outscore Blacks and Hispanics but the results showed minority students improving at a more rapid pace than whites. For example, the math and science proficiency level for white students rose by 4.6 points between the 2003-2004 and the 2005-2006 school years. However, the proficiency level for Blacks improved by 17.9 points and that for Hispanics went up by 18.3 points. Since 2002, the MSP program has supported institutions of higher education and K-12 school systems in partnering higher education faculty from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines with K-12 teachers. Through the program, STEM faculty provide professional development and mentoring to math and science teachers to deepen their content knowledge in their field of expertise--all with the goal of better preparing students in these subjects (source: Taylor Media Services) Speak Out
