CHICAGO DEFENDER ACKNOWLEDGES SPIRITUAL LEADERS: Twenty are honored on May 17.(May 16, 2008)
The Chicago Defender newspaper in recognition of the many spiritual leaders who have committed themselves to serving God and their communities, will honor 20 Chicago-area pastors in their first annual Pastors Salute on Saturday, May 17, 2008.
The salute will be held in the Regency Room of the Hyatt Regency Chicago from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at 131 East Wacker St, Chicago, IL and will feature special presentations, a gourmet buffet and live entertainment by Gospel group, Journey Song. “While many of us take varied routes to spirituality, one common thread that binds us together is faith – the foundation of all spiritual teachings,” said Michael J. House, president of the Chicago Defender newspaper. “Chicago, like other cities, is facing some very challenging times and at this time in particular, it’s vital that we join in that common thread of faith, and show our support for all Chicago-area pastors. We hope the Pastors Salute is another way to bring us together as a community as we show our love and appreciation for our pastors - men and women - of passionate faith and steadfast service.” Founded in 1905 by Robert Sengstacke Abbott, the Chicago Defender for 100 years has been the voice of African-Americans in Chicago’s communities. The Chicago Defender spoke out against lynching, racism and segregation. It led the movement known as the Great Migration; promoted the activities of pioneering aviatrix Bessie Colerman; led the charge to integrate the United States Armed Services, and promoted the careers of Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks and renowned author Langston Hughes. The Chicago Defender, along with the Chicago Defender Charities, is the producer and organizer of the world famous Bud Billiken Day Parade and Picnic. The parade originated in 1929 as a vehicle to showcase children. Speak Out
