SPOTLIGHTING GIAVANNA FOSTER: 9th grader places in top ten in California spelling bee.

    *After spelling her way tot he California State Junior High Spelling Championship, Giavanna Foster, a 9th Grader at City Honors High School, represented Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) and LA COUNTY well holding her own for over 4 hours placing in the top 10 spellers of the state.
 
     The event featured over 60 of the top spellers in the state of California competing for this year's championship. Giavanna is a familiar face in the state competition placing  11th in the 2007 California State Bee last year participating as an 8th Grader of Crozier Middle School.
 
     This year of 2008 marks the 5th year Giavanna has participated in the California State Bee competitions with her winnings of 1st place in Spelling Bees since 2nd Grade, where she earned her First Bee win as a student of Kelso Elementary School of Inglewood, California. Giavanna has won over 8 championships on the District level since 2nd grade and considers spelling a fun hobby.
 
     Giavanna represented Inglewood and LA COUNTY in this year's California State Jr. High Bee and came in 10th out of 60 students, all of whom were from Northern California.

     "I love City Honors and spelling and I'm so happy to represent my school, the Inglewood Unified School District, and LA COUNTY in the competition again this year", says Giavanna.
 
     During her elementary school years, Giavanna was constantly encouraged by her principal, Richard Barter of Oak Street School. Barter coached her agin this year and was more than proud to accompany her to this year's Bee to see her make the top 10.
 
     "Giavanna is truly a special young girl with an incredible gift in spelling. We are proud of her placing in the top 10 representing IUSD which is a first in the history of California State Bees.", says Barter.
 
     In addition to being a Spelling Bee Champion, Giavanna is a Community Service Representative with the John Amos Youth Foundation, and  Vice President of her Literature Class at City Honors High School, acknowledged as one of the top schools in the nation by US News and World Report.
