FUNDRAISING TO BENEFIT GOSPEL DJ BABY BISHOP: Gavin Montgomery supported by gospel stars as he battles Parkinson’s disease.(May 21, 2008)
Throughout the 1990s Gavin Montgomery was considered one of East coast’s best Gospel DJs on the rise.
Known for his down-to-earth yet almost professional style of speaking, Montgomery was nicknamed “Baby Bishop” for his youth as much as for his maturity. Today, he battles Parkinson’s disease and Maurette Brown-Clark, Bryan Wilson, Stephen Hurd, the Choir Boyz, Maryland Mass Choir, Andre Nance and Greater Purpose, Reunion Choir of Baltimore and Jonathan Nelson and Purpose come together for a fundraising concert to benefit him. The benefit concert is staged by Melvin Rascoe of Rascoe Productions, DJ Seoul of Radio One, Rev. Sandy Johnson, Jeff Scriggs, Ericka Johnson, Duane Johnson of WEAA, and WCAO radio announcer Doresa Harvey. It will be held Friday, June 13, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Empowerment Temple, 4217 Primrose Avenue, Baltimore, MD (21215). Baby Bishop is a classically trained vocalist of Shenandoah Conservatory and a theology student at Washington Bible College, his studies even took him to Europe. Although he’s been a radio announcer for a variety of stations along the East coast and even a TV host on Baltimore’s WMAR Channel 2, Montgomery’s most recent position was as an announcer at WWIN Spirit 1400 AM in Baltimore, MD. A few months ago Montgomery’s medical condition forced him to give up his beloved seat behind the microphone. The 42 year old radio jock was diagnosed with a debilitating case of Parkinson’s disease which has left him virtually immobile and confined to a nursing home. Because of the skyrocketing medical bills, the rent is behind on his family’s apartment, so Montgomery’s friends in the Gospel industry are coming to the aid of Montgomery, his wife and their three children. The concert is free but a free-will offering will be accepted to help raise fund for Montgomery. Speak Out
