*The life of renowned Nigerian musician  Fela Anikulapo Kuti will be told in musical form in a new off-Broadway production from Bill T. Jones, the Tony-winning choreographer of Broadway's "Spring Awakening."

"Fela!," to be choreographed and directed by Jones, will feature Kuti's music performed onstage  by Brooklyn-based group Antibalas and other members of the New York Afrobeat community.

Press notes state: "Audiences are welcomed into the extravagant, decadent and rebellious world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), [the musical] explores Kuti's controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician." Kuti was a strong critic of Nigeria's military government in the 70's.

The production will run at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts July 29 through Sept. 21. Opening night is scheduled for Sept. 4.
