OBAMA'S L.A. FUNDRAISER NETS $5 MIL: Tickets to the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion event went for $2,300 a pop. *Sen. Barack Obama raised nearly $5 million at a celeb-drenched event in Los Angeles Tuesday that featured a who's who of folks from the entertainment field, including Jennifer Beals, Sugar Ray Leonard and Samuel L. Jackson. According to Nikki Finke's Deadline blog, tickets were $2,300 for the gala's general reception at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, while tickets to the VIP dinner were $28,500 for the Democratic National Committee. Actor Dennis Quaid, also on hand at the general reception, announced to the crowd that his 7½-month-old twins are fans of Obama, and say, "Ohhh!" whenever the senator is on TV, according to E! Online. Don Cheadle reportedly joked from the stage that he's hoping his involvement with the campaign will mean he—"not Will Smith"—will end up playing Barack in his biopic.
*A court has ordered Kanye West to pay off the $600,000 mortgage on his late mother's condo in Illinois. When Dr. Donda West died in November from complications following plastic surgery, she left behind a mortgage that has since ballooned due to unpaid fees and interest.
*Shaquille O'Neal has lost his second police badge in two days due to his recent profanity-laced freestyle rap that dissed Kobe Bryant.
*While federal prosecutors attempt to force Wesley Snipes into starting his three-year prison sentence immediately, the actor is asking that a judge grant him permission to leave the country until his appeal on a tax conviction is scheduled. Court documents filed by Snipes' lead defense counsel Daniel Meachum said the actor's failure to participate next month in final editing of "Gallowwalker" may endanger the film's scheduled release date and the movie star's "future livelihood as an actor." The production schedule for "Chasing the Dragon" begins Sept. 8 in Thailand and is expected to last through November. "Mr. Snipes will, of course, voluntarily return after his work on this film - as he has done each time he has been granted permission by this court," Meachum said in the federal filing.
*A fire has gutted an abandoned recording studio in Virginia Beach, Va. owned by producer Teddy Riley, and investigators say it will be about a week before they can determine the cause. “When it’s destroyed as much as that was, that can be difficult,” Battalion Chief David Hutcheson, a spokesman for the Virginia Beach Fire Department, told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper. Riley's Future Records Recording Studios was scheduled to go up for auction when Tuesday's fire broke out. The owner of the property, Dunkirk Properties LLC, owes more than $18,000 in back taxes, according to the city treasurer’s office. In February, lawyers agreed to seek a buyer for the studio, which was described as functional even though the equipment was severely outdated. Late last month, an auction for the property was held, but no one met the opening bid of $500,000. The studio on Virginia Beach Blvd was once the place where Riley record tracks for his group BLACKstreet and for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Heavy D, among others. The influential producer who created New Jack Swing has had financial and legal difficulties in recent years. He filed for bankruptcy in 2002 but still owed the Internal Revenue Service about $1 million in unpaid taxes. His home in Church Point, Va. was sold in 2006 for $1.5 million. The proceeds were used to pay tax debts. Funds from the studio auction were to help pay off a $700,000 loan against the studio that Riley later defaulted on.

*A London cameraman, hired by TMZ.com to track celebs in town for Nelson Mandela's birthday concert, knew exactly how to get Oprah Winfrey to give him the time of day – as both drove side by side down a major street. The photographer rolled up to Winfrey's chauffeured BMW and literally begged her to roll down the window and answer just one question. "Why are you not still supporting Barack Obama?" the pap yelled out from his car.
*Little Ming Lee and Aoki Simmons will have to make room in their bank accounts for thousands more dollars per month, according to child support documents uncovered this week by TMZ.com. JUSTIN GATLIN APPEALS JUDGE'S RULING: Banned sprinter sends motion by e-mail to make Saturday deadline. *Justin Gatlin has not given up his fight to overturn a ruling by the International Olympic Committee that banned him from competing at the U.S. Track and Field's Olympic trials this weekend. On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier ruled that he did not have jurisdiction to overrule a decision by the U.S. Olympic Committee regarding eligibility of an athlete. Gatlin's attorneys on Wednesday sent a motion by e-mail to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, seeking an emergency injunction that would allow him to participate in the 100-meter races that begin Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Officials in the Atlanta court said a decision would be expedited, reports the Associated Press. USA Track and Field officials said they have made contingency plans for the defending Olympic champion to run in qualifying heats Saturday if the courts rule he can. Gatlin was suspended for four years after a 2006 positive test for the male sex hormone testosterone. The violation was ruled his second doping offense because the sprinter had also tested positive in 2001 for prescribed medication to treat attention deficit disorder. That medication, however, was ruled by arbitrators as an inadvertent violation that didn't enhance his performance.
*In an interview on "Our World with Black Enterprise," to air nationally this weekend, U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama talks candidly to host Ed Gordon about the reality of race and diversity in America: “Race is still a factor in our society, there’s no doubt about that," The senator also addresses early criticism from folks who early on questioned his blackness. “At the beginning I wasn’t black enough. Folks were saying I was too black at one point. I can’t spend my time worrying about that," Obama says. "It is what it is, but my race isn’t going to change. So as a consequence I think that the best thing for me to do is just to make sure that I am delivering my message with clarity. A message of unifying the country, getting beyond some of these old stereotypes, making sure that people feel that I’m sincere in terms of how I want to move the country foreword. If we do that then I’m confidant we can still win.”
*Lil Wayne has joined the roster of performers booked for the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, to be held Oct. 24-26 at New Orleans' City Park, reports Billboard. The festival has R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots as headliners, while Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Joss Stone, Lupe Fiasco and the Blind Boys of Alabama will also give performances. Wayne's scheduled appearance at Voodoo is legit, but his advertised gig at Club Illusions in Alabama on Saturday was a big fat scam that ended up leaving hundreds of fans disappointed. According to WENN, the bogus concert promoter presented himself to the venue as Tony Lee of Coastal Boy Entertainment. After promising club manager Esa Jones that Weezey would be in attendance, 700 tickets were sold for the June 21 show.
*Revamped versions of two albums from the Jacksons – 1978's "Destiny" and 1980's "Triumph" – will be released on Aug. 12 via Epic/Legacy, reports Billboard. "Destiny," the group's first album for Epic Records, includes among its eight tracks the hit singles "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" and "Blame It on the Boogie." The reissue includes disco mixes of both songs by John Luongo. "Triumph," meanwhile, spawned the hits "Can You Feel It," "Lovely One," "This Place Hotel" and "Walk Right Now." The re-release features a single mix of "This Place Hotel," and both a disco and instrumental mix of "Walk Right Now," also by John Luongo.
*Al Sharpton barely had time to deal with this week's Don Imus flare-up when Ralph Nader made headlines for saying that Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama "talks white" and ignores issues of poverty. Nader, a consumer activist and presidential candidate on the Independent ticket, told Denver's Rocky Mountain News Wednesday: "I haven't heard [Obama] have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards." Sharpton's response was swift. "I don't know how one 'talks black or white,'" wrote Sharpton in an email sent to members of the media. "There are clearly different styles and speech cadences in every community." In closing, Sharpton said Nader's comments were "beneath the respect many have had for you and more importantly below the level of political discourse we need at this point in history.
*Jay-Z is reportedly looking into becoming a part owner of the New York Yankees, which would expand his diverse range of investments that already include a record label, clothing line, liquor and the New Jersey Nets basketball team. The rap mogul, at one time, was close to buying into London soccer team Arsenal Football Club, but the deal fell through. "I had invested in the Nets, and they (Arsenal bosses) asked me if I was interested in investing. But I get that from time to time," Jigga explained to London's Time Out magazine. He continued: "Someone told me yesterday that someone else had a piece of the New York Yankees - 'We wanna talk to you, yadda yadda yadda.' I mean, I love the Yankees so I'm in the middle of following that through, but sometimes it comes to be nothing. That (Arsenal) was one of the times it came to nothing."
*While vacationing with his girlfriend's family in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, O.J. Simpson told a newspaper reporter that his upcoming trial on kidnapping and armed robbery charges is basically a joke. "If I was anybody else, I wouldn't be going to court," Simpson told a reporter for Fargo, N.D., radio station KFGO. "How many trials have you ever heard of where both of the victims say they don't want this guy to go to jail, they don't want to go to court, and you still go to court? It's only me." "But unfortunately for me, I got like a bull's eye on my front, dollar sign on my back, you get involved with people who want to be governor and stuff," said Simpson, referring to Clark County District Attorney David Roger.
