OBAMA'S L.A. FUNDRAISER NETS $5 MIL: Tickets to the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion event went for $2,300 a pop.

*Sen. Barack Obama raised nearly $5 million at a celeb-drenched event in Los Angeles Tuesday that featured a who's who of folks from the entertainment field, including Jennifer Beals, Sugar Ray Leonard and Samuel L. Jackson.

According to Nikki Finke's Deadline blog, tickets were $2,300 for the gala's general reception at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, while tickets to the VIP dinner were $28,500 for the Democratic National Committee.

Actor Dennis Quaid, also on hand at the general reception, announced to the crowd that his 7½-month-old twins are fans of Obama, and say, "Ohhh!" whenever the senator is on TV, according to E! Online.

Don Cheadle reportedly joked from the stage that he's hoping his involvement with the campaign will mean he—"not Will Smith"—will end up playing Barack in his biopic.

Seal, who performed at the fundraiser with producer David Foster, explained that although he is not a citizen, he "has a vested interest in this country" because his children are American.

KANYE ORDERED TO SETTLE MOM'S MORTAGE: Illinois company demands more than $600Gs plus interest on Donda's condo.

*A court has ordered Kanye West to pay off the $600,000 mortgage on his late mother's condo in Illinois.

When Dr. Donda West died in November from complications following plastic surgery, she left behind a mortgage that has since ballooned due to unpaid fees and interest.

The mortgage company filed a claim against her estate, which Kanye and his business manager Shawn Gee took control of earlier this month.

The rapper inherited less than $250,000 of assets from his mother, who did not have a will at the time of her death.

SHAQ'S LOSES ANOTHER BADGE OVER KOBE RAP: Va. sheriff seeks return of hardware given for his work with Internet Crimes task force.

*Shaquille O'Neal has lost his second police badge in two days due to his recent profanity-laced freestyle rap that dissed Kobe Bryant.

One day after a sheriff in Arizona requested the return of Shaq's special deputy's badge, a sheriff in Bedford County, Virginia followed suit, requesting that the Phoenix Suns star turn in the badge he was given for tracking Internet crimes against children.

Also, Shaq's image will no longer be used to promote Operation Blue Ridge Thunder, the unit that he worked with to investigate Internet predators.

The NBA star served as a reserve deputy for the Bedford County sheriff's department from 2004 through the end of 2007.

SNIPES WANTS PERMISSION TO LEAVE COUNTRY: Actor trying to film two movies while waiting for tax conviction appeal and prison sentence.

*While federal prosecutors attempt to force Wesley Snipes into starting his three-year prison sentence immediately, the actor is asking that a judge grant him permission to leave the country until his appeal on a tax conviction is scheduled.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Snipes is hoping to go to London for post-production editing of his horror picture "Gallowwalker" and to Bangkok, Thailand, to star in "Chasing the Dragon," an action-thriller in which he plays a FBI agent pursuing an Asian drug lord.

Court documents filed by Snipes' lead defense counsel Daniel Meachum said the actor's failure to participate next month in final editing of "Gallowwalker" may endanger the film's scheduled release date and the movie star's "future livelihood as an actor."

The production schedule for "Chasing the Dragon" begins Sept. 8 in Thailand and is expected to last through November.

"Mr. Snipes will, of course, voluntarily return after his work on this film - as he has done each time he has been granted permission by this court," Meachum said in the federal filing.

In April, Snipes was sentenced by U.S. Senior District Judge William Terrell Hodges to 36 months in federal prison after a jury found the actor guilty of failing to file federal tax returns for 1999, 2000 and 2001, years during which he earned more than $13.5 million. He remains free on an appeal bond that has been challenged by federal prosecutors who want him jailed.

FIRE RIPS THROUGH TEDDY RILEY'S VA. STUDIO: Investigators say it will take a week before officials can determine cause.

*A fire has gutted an abandoned recording studio in Virginia Beach, Va. owned by producer Teddy Riley, and investigators say it will be about a week before they can determine the cause.

“When it’s destroyed as much as that was, that can be difficult,” Battalion Chief David Hutcheson, a spokesman for the Virginia Beach Fire Department, told the Virginian-Pilot newspaper.

Riley's Future Records Recording Studios was scheduled to go up for auction when Tuesday's fire broke out.  The owner of the property, Dunkirk Properties LLC, owes more than $18,000 in back taxes, according to the city treasurer’s office.

In February, lawyers agreed to seek a buyer for the studio, which was described as functional even though the equipment was severely outdated. Late last month, an auction for the property was held, but no one met the opening bid of $500,000.

The studio on Virginia Beach Blvd was once the place where Riley record tracks for his group BLACKstreet and for Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and Heavy D, among others.

The influential producer who created New Jack Swing has had financial and legal difficulties in recent years. He filed for bankruptcy in 2002 but still owed the Internal Revenue Service about $1 million in unpaid taxes. His home in Church Point, Va. was sold in 2006 for $1.5 million. The proceeds were used to pay tax debts.

Funds from the studio auction were to help pay off a $700,000 loan against the studio that Riley later defaulted on.

NICOLE RICHIE HITS UP 'CHUCK': Lionel's daughter to guest star on NBC series in the fall.

*Nicole Richie just got a new job to go along with her newborn baby. The mother of four-month-old Harlow will make a guest appearance on the NBC comedy "Chuck" when its second season begins on Sept. 29.

"Chuck" stars Zachary Levi in the title role of a nerd who becomes an unwitting counterterrorism operative.

The celebutante will play a snarky, spiteful girl who went to school with Chuck's CIA handler, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski), and has to confront her at their 10-year high school reunion, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"This role is a great opportunity for Nicole to show off her comedic skills and be diabolically evil and kick some butt," executive producer Josh Schwartz said.

OPRAH SCHOOLS PAP ON OBAMA SUPPORT: Host sets record straight while pursued down a London street.

*A London cameraman, hired by TMZ.com to track celebs in town for Nelson Mandela's birthday concert, knew exactly how to get Oprah Winfrey to give him the time of day – as both drove side by side down a major street.

The photographer rolled up to Winfrey's chauffeured BMW and literally begged her to roll down the window and answer just one question.
She pulled down the outer tinted window, leaving another, thinner pane of glass in tact.

"Why are you not still supporting Barack Obama?" the pap yelled out from his car.

"I am. I'm 100 percent supporting Barack Obama," she told him through the thinner glass. "Are you kidding?"

Suddenly, the second glass comes down and Oprah's head and pointer finger are out the window.

"I was never not supporting Barack Obama," she told the pap.

"Does he still need the female vote?" asked the photographer.

"Of course he does, he needs all the votes. And I said to him I'd go door to door, knocking on doors for him," she said, wagging her finger. "That's how much I support Barack Obama."

SIMMONS KIDS TO GET $20,000/MONTH FROM DADDY: Child support terms revealed in Russell/Kimora Lee divorce.

*Little Ming Lee and Aoki Simmons will have to make room in their bank accounts for thousands more dollars per month, according to child support documents uncovered this week by TMZ.com.

The daughters of divorcing parents Kimora Lee and Russell Simmons are to receive $20,000 each month in support from their father, per an agreement filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The monthly checks will come until 2019 for 8-year-old Ming Lee, and 2022 for 5-year-old Aoki.

Kimora Lee, 33, filed for divorce in March after nine years of marriage. She's asking for primary custody of the kids and that Russell, 50, be granted "reasonable child visitation – accompanied at all times by the children's nanny and security personnel."

JUSTIN GATLIN APPEALS JUDGE'S RULING: Banned sprinter sends motion by e-mail to make Saturday deadline.

*Justin Gatlin has not given up his fight to overturn a ruling by the International Olympic Committee that banned him from competing at the U.S. Track and Field's Olympic trials this weekend.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier ruled that he did not have jurisdiction to overrule a decision by the U.S. Olympic Committee regarding eligibility of an athlete.

Gatlin's attorneys on Wednesday sent a motion by e-mail to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, seeking an emergency injunction that would allow him to participate in the 100-meter races that begin Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Officials in the Atlanta court said a decision would be expedited, reports the Associated Press.

USA Track and Field officials said they have made contingency plans for the defending Olympic champion to run in qualifying heats Saturday if the courts rule he can.

"He's only planning on coming out if the court says he's able to do so," Gatlin's agent, the former track star Renaldo Nehemiah, told The Associated Press. "It's just a plane ride. He doesn't compete until Saturday. I'd imagine it's doable as long as he has the information in a timely manner."

Gatlin was suspended for four years after a 2006 positive test for the male sex hormone testosterone. The violation was ruled his second doping offense because the sprinter had also tested positive in 2001 for prescribed medication to treat attention deficit disorder. That medication, however, was ruled by arbitrators as an inadvertent violation that didn't enhance his performance.

In the appeals filing, Gatlin's lawyers say they're not trying to fight the USOC's ultimate authority to hand out spots for its Olympic team. Rather, they said they're trying to ensure that Gatlin's rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act aren't violated.

ED GORDON INTERVIEWS OBAMA FOR 'OUR WORLD': Discussion on race to air this weekend.

*In an interview on "Our World with Black Enterprise," to air nationally this weekend, U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama talks candidly to host Ed Gordon about the reality of race and diversity in America:

“Race is still a factor in our society, there’s no doubt about that,"
Obama tells Gordon. "The fact that so far we’ve been successful in this presidential run doesn’t suddenly erase 400 years of history or the realities that day to day ordinary African Americans, or Latino Americans, or Asian Americans are experiencing in all sorts of ways.

"But it obviously shows progress and we should celebrate that progress even as we continue to recognize that better is not enough and that we've still got a long way to go and the wonderful thing is I think that the majority of white Americans believe that same thing."

The senator also addresses early criticism from folks who early on questioned his blackness.

“At the beginning I wasn’t black enough. Folks were saying I was too black at one point. I can’t spend my time worrying about that," Obama says. "It is what it is, but my race isn’t going to change. So as a consequence I think that the best thing for me to do is just to make sure that I am delivering my message with clarity. A message of unifying the country, getting beyond some of these old stereotypes, making sure that people feel that I’m sincere in terms of how I want to move the country foreword. If we do that then I’m confidant we can still win.”

"Our World with Black Enterprise "will air its exclusive interview with Sen. Barack Obama and host Ed Gordon nationwide in most major markets across the country, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.

ALA. CLUB FALLS FOR FAKE LIL WAYNE GIG: Plus, rapper joins Voodoo Experience lineup in New Orleans.

*Lil Wayne has joined the roster of performers booked for the Voodoo Experience in New Orleans, to be held Oct. 24-26 at New Orleans' City Park, reports Billboard.

The festival has R.E.M., Nine Inch Nails and Stone Temple Pilots as headliners, while Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Joss Stone, Lupe Fiasco and the Blind Boys of Alabama will also give performances.

Wayne's scheduled appearance at Voodoo is legit, but his advertised gig at Club Illusions in Alabama on Saturday was a big fat scam that ended up leaving hundreds of fans disappointed.

According to WENN, the bogus concert promoter presented himself to the venue as Tony Lee of Coastal Boy Entertainment. After promising club manager Esa Jones that Weezey would be in attendance, 700 tickets were sold for the June 21 show.

But concert goers were ultimately left hanging, and the crook made off with over $45,000 in ticket sales.

"We got scammed real bad," said Jones. "It looked planned, they printed tickets, had radio advertisements, ticket locations, it looks so legit."

A police investigation has now been launched into the alleged fraud.

TWO JACKSONS ALBUMS GET AN UPGRADE: 'Destiny' and 'Triumph' to be reissued next month with extras.

*Revamped versions of two albums from the Jacksons – 1978's "Destiny" and 1980's "Triumph" – will be released on Aug. 12 via Epic/Legacy, reports Billboard.

"Destiny," the group's first album for Epic Records, includes among its eight tracks the hit singles "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" and "Blame It on the Boogie." The reissue includes disco mixes of both songs by John Luongo.

"Triumph," meanwhile, spawned the hits "Can You Feel It," "Lovely One," "This Place Hotel" and "Walk Right Now." The re-release features a single mix of "This Place Hotel," and both a disco and instrumental mix of "Walk Right Now," also by John Luongo.

SHARPTON TARGETS NADER OVER OBAMA COMMENTS: Rev. takes issue with Ralph questioning senator's blackness.

*Al Sharpton barely had time to deal with this week's Don Imus flare-up when Ralph Nader made headlines for saying that Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama "talks white" and ignores issues of poverty.

Nader, a consumer activist and presidential candidate on the Independent ticket, told Denver's Rocky Mountain News Wednesday: "I haven't heard [Obama] have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What's keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn't want to appear like Jesse Jackson? We'll see all that play out in the next few months and if he gets elected afterwards."

Asked to clarify whether he thought Obama does try to "talk white," Nader said: "Of course."

 Sharpton's response was swift.

"I don't know how one 'talks black or white,'" wrote Sharpton in an email sent to members of the media. "There are clearly different styles and speech cadences in every community."

In closing, Sharpton said Nader's comments were "beneath the respect many have had for you and more importantly below the level of political discourse we need at this point in history.

"Those of us that deal with real people in real pain in the black community every day need real answers and real change and that is more important than the volume or style in which it is presented."

Obama, meanwhile, said Nader is "somebody who is trying to get attention and whose campaign hasn't gotten any traction. So what better way to get some traction than to make an inflammatory statement like the one that he made."

JAY-Z WANTS YANKEES IN HIS PORTFOLIO?: Rap mogul reportedly open to owning shares in the New York ball club.

*Jay-Z is reportedly looking into becoming a part owner of the New York Yankees, which would expand his diverse range of investments that already include a record label, clothing line, liquor and the New Jersey Nets basketball team.

The rap mogul, at one time, was close to buying into London soccer team Arsenal Football Club, but the deal fell through.

"I had invested in the Nets, and they (Arsenal bosses) asked me if I was interested in investing. But I get that from time to time," Jigga explained to London's Time Out magazine.

He continued: "Someone told me yesterday that someone else had a piece of the New York Yankees - 'We wanna talk to you, yadda yadda yadda.' I mean, I love the Yankees so I'm in the middle of following that through, but sometimes it comes to be nothing. That (Arsenal) was one of the times it came to nothing."

O.J. SIMPSON SAYS HE'S BEING PICKED ON: Juice believes he would not be facing trial if anyone else had committed alleged crime.

*While vacationing with his girlfriend's family in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, O.J. Simpson told a newspaper reporter that his upcoming trial on kidnapping and armed robbery charges is basically a joke.

"If I was anybody else, I wouldn't be going to court," Simpson told a reporter for Fargo, N.D., radio station KFGO. "How many trials have you ever heard of where both of the victims say they don't want this guy to go to jail, they don't want to go to court, and you still go to court? It's only me."

"But unfortunately for me, I got like a bull's eye on my front, dollar sign on my back, you get involved with people who want to be governor and stuff," said Simpson, referring to Clark County District Attorney David Roger.

Attempting to clean up the statements, Simpson's lawyer, Yale Galanter, said Thursday that Simpson was merely venting about the stress of his trial, scheduled for Sept. 8 in Las Vegas.

"I think O.J.'s comments show how totally frustrated he is over this incident that involves family heirlooms that were stolen from him by some very nefarious characters," Galanter said, adding that O.J. has the "utmost respect" for Roger and another prosecutor in the case, Chris Owens.

"I have no reason to believe their motives in this case have been anything less than ethical and honorable," Galanter said.

Simpson and two co-defendants, Ehrlich and Clarence "C.J." Stewart, were charged with kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from allegations they robbed two sports memorabilia dealers in a Las Vegas hotel room last September.

OBAMA'S HISTORIC RUN BOOSTS RACIST ACTIVITY: Washington Post reports of increase in traffic on racist Web sites.

*Washington Post reporter Eli Saslow wrote an article in Sunday's edition about an increase in racist and white supremacist activity, mainly on the Internet, since Sen. Barack Obama clinched the Democratic Party's nomination for president.

"I haven't seen this much anger in a long, long time," Billy Roper, 36, who runs a group called White Revolution in Russellville, Ark, told the Post. "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly nonwhite president."

Deborah Lauter, civil rights director for the Anti-Defamation League, which monitors hate group activity, says: "The truth is, we're finding an explosion in these kinds of hateful sentiments on the Net, and it's a growing problem."

Don Black, a former Ku Klux Klan member and founder of Stormfront.org, a Web site with the motto "white pride world wide," said traffic on his site has increased from a few thousand visitors per day in 2002 to more than 40,000 unique users each day.

Neo-Nazi and white power groups acknowledge that they have little ability to derail Obama's candidacy, so instead some have decided to take advantage of its potential. White-power leaders who once feared Obama's campaign have come to regard it as a recruiting tool. The groups now portray his candidacy as a vehicle to disenfranchise whites.
