VENUS WINS FAMILY SHOWDOWN: She beats Serena to take Wimbledon womens championship.(July 4, 2008)
*File this one under "at least they keep in the family." Specifically, the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, have faced each other once again at Wimbledon and this time Venus is the winner. In defeating her sister, in a hard fought battle, Venus has claimed her 5th Wimbledon championship. Here's a recap of Saturday's center court match at the All England Club: Serena, who beat her sister in their previous two meetings in the final, began confidently to take early lead but Venus clawed her way back and stole the set 7-5. Serena broke after an epic game in the second to go 2-1 up but Venus hit back immediately and took the set 6-4 to seal the match in one hour and 51 minutes. Serena made the perfect start with a break of serve in the opening game of the match. The 26-year-old led 2-0 and won 10 of the first 11 points before Venus levelled at 4-4 and gradually gained the upper hand. Another break of serve in the 12th game gave Venus the set 7-5 after 53 hard-fought minutes. Venus held serve in the opening game of the second set, helped by a record-equalling 129mph serve. But Venus was unable to repeat the trick in her next service game, saving six break points but slipping over beyond the baseline on the seventh to give Serena the advantage. Venus immediately broke back to level at 2-2 and the next five games also went with serve until Venus forged two match points on her sister's serve in the 10th game. Serena saved the first with a thumping ace but an errant backhand on the second enabled Venus to successfully defend her title. -------------- Earlier we reported: *Venus and Serena Williams steamrolled over their opponents at Wimbledon this week to reach Saturday's final round together for the first time in five years. In that 2003 face-off, Serena beat her older sister in the championship match for the second consecutive year (4-6 6-4 6-2). Saturday's matchup comes at the expense of Elena Dementieva, who fell Thursday to defending champion Venus 6-1, 7-6 (3); and China's Zheng Lie, who lost several hours later to Serena 6-2, 7-6 (5). The Williams sisters showdown will be their third battle for the Wimbledon crown, and their seventh time facing off for a Grand Slam title. Serena told reporters that Venus will be the toughest opponent she's played all tournament. Venus, meanwhile, said of Saturday's match: "It's every Williams for themself."
