EUR HEALTH REPORT: Diabetes Striking More and More Americans, Especially Blacks(July 4, 2008)
The percentage of Americans suffering from diabetes is on the rise and the Black and the poor are being especially had hit. That is a summary of a report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. The report showed that just within the last 2 years 3 million Americans were diagnosed with diabetes. The increase brings the national total to an estimated 24 million people. Meanwhile, for reasons which are not entirely clear, minority group members are being hit by the disease more than whites. While 6.6 percent of whites have diabetes, 11.8 percent of Blacks, 10.4 percent of Hispanics and 7.5 percent of Asian Americans suffer from the ailment which can be combated in part with exercise, weight loss and proper diet. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It is characterized by high levels of blood glucose (or sugar) which results from defects in insulin production in the body. The disease can cause serious health problems including heart disease, blindness, amputations and kidney failure. Persons interested in more information about combating diabetes can visit online www.cdc.gov/diabetes. (source: Taylor Media Services)
