GUNMAN OPENS FIRE IN TENNESSEE CHURCH: Jim D. Adkisson shot and killed two people and injured 7 before being tackled by parishioners.

     Sunday, a gunman entered the Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, TN and fired multiple times with a shotgun before being tackled by parishioners, according to public safety officials in the city. 

     Two people were killed and seven others were injured. Two hundred people were in the church attending Sunday service watching children perform.

     WBIR-TV and WATE-TV in Knoxville report that the gunman, Jim D. Adkisson, 58, is in custody.

     The man slain was identified as Greg McKendry, 60, a longtime church member and usher.

     Church member Barbara Kemper told The Associated Press that McKendry "stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us."

     Linda Kreager, 61, died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center a few hours after the shooting, Knoxville city spokesman Randall Kenner said.

     At EUR press time five people remained hospitalized, all in critical or serious condition. Two others were treated and released.
