WHOOPI'S XANADU GIG BOOSTS BOX OFFICE: Ticket sales jump by $75,000 after addition of 'View' co-host.
*Just call Whoopi Goldberg "The Fixer." After bringing some much-needed stability to ABC's "The View," the veteran actress has helped to boost ticket sales of Broadway's Xanadu ever since joining the cast on July 29.
According to Variety, the musical's box office jumped by more than $75,000 to $316,205, and drew audiences that reached 87% of capacity. That's the highest jump of the season, and good news for a musical that has never quite caught fire despite strong reviews and Tony nominations.
Goldberg's six-week turn as evil sister Calliope ends on September 7. Her Broadway resume includes a Drama Desk and Theatre World Award for her 1985 Broadway solo show Whoopi Goldberg. She has also starred on Broadway in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and another solo show Whoopi.
