*Lynwood, CA - With frighteningly low numbers of trauma and emergency services in South Los Angeles, hundreds of healthcare workers at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood will hold one-day strike on Thursday, August 28 at 12 noon to protest the health system's attempt to undermine important patient care protections and healthcare worker's voices.

The protest at St. Francis Medical Center will be coordinated simultaneously with four other hospitals across the state, all of which are part of the Daughters of Charity Health System and include a substantial number of African-American healthcare workers.

Over 870 caregivers at St. Francis Medical Center, who are represented by SEIU United Healthcare Workers-West, have been in negotiations with the health system since March and are proposing improvements to help ensure quality patient care and improve the hospital's ability to recruit and retain healthcare professionals.

However, administrators are threatening to eliminate key provisions that already exist in the contract which allow front-line caregivers a real voice in the delivery of patient care and treatment.

One year after the closure of Martin Luther King-Harbor Hospital, employees at St. Francis Medical Center have experienced dramatic increases in patient levels.  They believe this is not the time to remove safeguards to quality patient care.

Hospital workers protest hospital's attempt to undermine patient care and silence their voices.
