SERENA STILL UPSET OVER BAD CALLS: Tennis champ says she'd have more US Open titles if umpires were fair.(August 28, 2008)
*It's no secret that Serena Williams has had terrible luck with bad calls during her years at the US Open. When asked about it at this year's tournament, she says it still leaves a bad taste in her mouth. "One year I really ran into a lot of bad luck where I got the worst calls possible," said Williams, who rolled to an easy 6-1, 6-4 win over Kateryna Bondarenko in her first round match Tuesday. "Honestly, I couldn't even hit a shot because I was so nervous they would call every ball out. "That really wasn't my fault. I probably would have won that year, and I was gonna win that year. Unfortunately it didn't work out." In 2004, a bad call that went against her while playing Jennifer Capriati served as the driving force behind bringing in instant replay. Williams hit a backhand inside the sideline at deuce in the first game of the final set that was called good by the linesman but overruled by chair umpire Mariana Alves. Television replays showed the ball was clearly inside the line. The umpire was eventually dismissed from the tournament and the organizers apologized to Williams for the blunder. Williams won the US Open in 1999 and 2002.
