*Approximately two weeks ago, the U.S. Census Bureau released a study projecting that if currently birth and immigration trends continued, by the year 2042 whites would be a minority in America while Hispanics would zoom to roughly 30 percent of the population and Blacks would rise gradually to just 15 percent of the population.
Well, this week, the Census Bureau issued a new study showing that instead of immigration, the major reason for Hispanic population growth appears to be that Hispanic women are simply having babies at a much faster pace than Black or white females. In fact, Hispanic females are the only group countering a national trend of women having fewer and fewer babies. One result is that in about 34 years, according to the Census Bureau, there will be twice as many Hispanic Americans as there are African Americans in this country.
The focus of the government report was on the fact that a growing number of women are choosing not to have children at all. For example, among the 40 to 44 age group, 22.5 percent of non-Hispanic white women have never had a child. This compares to childlessness of 16.4 percent among Black women and 18.1 percent among Asian women. But only 14.4 percent of Hispanic women in the 40 to 44 age group are childless.
At the other end of the age spectrum, even Hispanic teenagers are having more babies than other teens. According to the study - Measuring Fertility Using the American Community Survey - 10.3 percent of Hispanic girls aged 15 to 19 have had at least one child. This compares to 8.4 percent of Blacks, 5.5 percent of whites and 4.1 percent of Asians in the same age group.
In addition, while two is the most popular number of children women decide to have, Hispanic women are more likely than white, Black, or Asian women to have three or four children. Interestingly, however, African American females are more likely than any other group to have seven or more children. (source: Taylor Media Services)
