MINNESOTA PASTOR REFUSES TO PREACH POLITICS: Dozens of church leaders across the country did so, but one Duluth pastor wouldn’t.(October 6, 2008)
The Associated Press reported last week that a dozens pastors around the country were expected to preach politics to their congregation, but one, Duluth pastor Bob Aspling, said he wouldn’t participate.
The AP reported that a conservative group from Arizona encouraged the clergy to deliver sermons that use the scriptures to distinguish between the two presidential candidates. But churches that openly supported specific politicians risk losing their tax-exempt status. The Alliance Defense Fund is challenging that ban by urging pastors to electioneer, and promised to provide legal support to those that become targets of IRS investigations. Pastor Bob Aspling of Crown Christian Family Church said he didn’t see the wisdom of the plan. He said he was contacted by the Alliance group but thinks the strategy is "kind of foolish."
