DEYA DIRECT!: There Should be Nothing Domestic About Violence

(October 9, 2008)

*October is Domestic Violence month.  But for some people it’s everyday. On the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.

One in three teens report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, slapped, choked or physically hurt by his or her partner.

Domestic Violence not only impacts the person being physically abused but as a child who saw her mother beaten, bruised & humiliated, I’m here to tell you that domestic violence hurts the whole family and those emotional scars can last a lifetime.

I know what it’s like to feel helpless as a little girl watching in horror the mother that took care of me, have her life threatened and the father who was suppose to protect me be a terrorist in our home.

My direct message – there is absolutely no excuse to beat a woman and ladies there is absolutely no excuse to stay in a dangerously unhealthy relationship, not even for the kids.  From a kid’s perspective, our lives are happier and healthier in a safe and stable environment.  I have yet to meet a child who would rather have their parents stay together in such a situation.

And, it’s also not enough to just leave. You need counseling and so do the kids.  Otherwise, you’ll repeat the dysfunctional cycle.  In fact, studies show that kids or teens who get involved in abusive relationships, as victims or offenders, do so because it’s their norm; they learned by the home example and they see it as normal behavior.  It’s not.  If you didn’t grow up seeing the adults in your life respect one another how will you know that you deserve to receive it, let alone give it?

The good and God news is that help is available.  For information on how to get help call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233(safe).  For teens in abusive relationships call the Teen Abuse Hotline at 1-866-331-9474.
