Reggae Sunsplash set to hit Florida and Brazil

*The 2009-2010 Reggae Sunsplash Music Festival will be celebrating it's proud legacy with the staging of star studded festivals in Florida, and Brazil.  Founder, Tony Johnson and his company, Junction have teamed with Bill Walker of BWPresents and Morgan Carey of Digital Riddims Inc. to illuminate the historic brand, most often associated with the timeless performances of pioneers including Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, Steel Pulse, Stevie Wonder and others.

Reggae Sunsplash music festivals (2009-2010) will feature chart topping mainstream superstars and a virtual who's who in reggae music. Some of the performers who have indicated their interest to hit the stage at the festival include Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, No Doubt, Sly and Robbie, Burning Spear, Willie Nelson, Beres Hammond, Black Uhuru, and Half Pint.

The show's producers, in the interest of honoring the history of Sunsplash, had invited the original Wailers who will be jamming with surprise celebrity guests. The Wailers will also provide back up duties for headliners as well.

The support of a cluster of key stations throughout Florida has already been secured, and record breaking attendance is anticipated. For inquiries contact: digitalriddims@gmail.com telephone 310 929 5007  and Bill@bwpresents.com telephone 512-786-0779.

Artistes jump on board the Disturbia rhythm

Preston Onfroy’s In Time Music label is gearing up for the release of its latest project, the Distrubia rhythm.  When this column stopped by the Big Yard studios recently, Onfroy was behind the controls while deejay Shane O was gearing up to record his contribution to the project.

‘This is the seventh project that I have worked on and so far the response to the Disturbia has been good. It’s going to be one of the rhythms to watch out for towards the end of the year going into 2009’, Onfroy said confidently.

So far the Disturbia project features songs from Shane O, Spice, Anthony B and Munga.  D’Angel is reportedly gearing up to jump on board the beat.

The In Time Music imprint has been in existence since 2001. It debuted with the Bedroom rhythm which featured tracks from a number of top acts including Capleton, Bounty Killer and Ce’Cile.

Its other rhythm projects include the Panic, Party Time (which featured the hit Satisfy Yourself from Sizzla); and Jump Off (which contained the Vybz Kartel hit Realest Ting).

Hit loaded Strictly the Best Volume 39 hits stores on November 25

VP Records’ Strictly the Best has been the longest running reggae music compilation over the years. The compilation first hit the streets in the late 1980’s and since then it has consistently been a strong seller.  The 2008 edition will hit stores on November 25 with the theme, Olympics.

The hit laden compilation will feature 17 tracks including Mus Come a Road by Mr. Vegas; Nuh Linga by Elephant Man; Back it Up by Lefside and Sean Paul; Gimmie Likkle by Beenie Man; and Just As I Am by LUST.

According to Vice President for Marketing and Promotions at VP Records, Cristy Barber, the tracks for Strictly the Best are culled from some of the hottest joints throughout the calendar year.  ‘The songs are considered throughout the calendar year. This series has been around for ever and this year the theme is the Olympics’, said Miss Barber.

Strictly the Best Volume 21 which was released in 1998 is to date ranked as the biggest seller in the series. Featuring the Billboard hit singles Tell Me (remix) by Beenie Man and Tanto Metro and Devonte’s Everyone Falls in Love, the edition sold 117,297 copies according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Large turnout for Gyptian’s I Can Feel Your Pain album launch in New York

The launch of Gyptian’s latest album for VP Records, I Can Feel Your Pain, was recently held at the exclusive Club Element in Manhattan.  Industry heavyweights including representatives from SRP and SRC record labels; grass roots and mainstream media, were in attendance.

The jam packed venue saw Gyptian taking the stage to deliver familiar songs as well as tracks from the new album.

The program kicked off with an Egyptian belly dancing showcase, since the launch had an Egyptian-theme, in lieu of Gyptian's original alias, Egyptian.

The appreciative crowd jammed to Gyptian’s musical styling which was accompanied by an acoustic guitarist and percussionist.  Serious Times was thrown in for good measure, in an unplugged performance.  Beautiful Lady, and the new tracks Love Against the Wall, Caving In and the title track, I Can Feel Your Pain rounded out a pleasing set.

The event was coordinated and produced by New York-based media marketing company, Rhona Fox Inc which also celebrated its first year in the industry on the same night of the launch.  Rhona Fox Inc produced Gyptian’s video for the single I Can Feel Your Pain which topped video charts a few months ago.

BITS AND PIECES

The Reggae Film Festival will be held from February 26 to 28 next year.  The festival will see the screening of new and old feature and documentary films that feature aspects of Jamaican culture as a central theme or soundtrack.  An Awards Committee will judge the films and present awards in several categories.

Comedic duo Twin of Twins recently performed in the Turks and Caicos at a fundraising venture to assist victims of Hurricanes Hanna and Ike. Djs Crazy Neil and Currant Man also performed at the venture. The crowd was appreciative to the Twin of Twins performance which reportedly drew five encores.

The Guyana Music Awards will be held on November 30.  Among the nominees this year are Timeka Marshall,  Adrian Dutchin,  Jumo, Shelly G, Natural Black, and First Born.

Beres Hammond’s A Moment in Time concert will unfold on December 28. The venue is yet to be revealed but our usual reliable sources have disclosed that patrons are definitely in for a surprise.

Lucky Old Sun by country music singer Kenny Chesney is the number one album in America. The album sold more than 176,000 copies in its first week of release to give Kenny his 5th #1 album on the Billboard 200.

Over in Dominica, the 12th staging of the World Creole Music Festival is set to take place from October 31 to November 2 at the Windsor Park Stadium in Rosseau.  Sean Paul, Nasio Fontaine, Machel Montano, and Belles Combo among others. The event is regarded as one of the signature events on the Caribbean festival calendar.
