BLACK HISTORY Nov. 7, 1876: Edward A. Bouchet received the Ph.D. degree in physics at Yale University and became the first black person to receive a doctorate at an American University. Nov. 8, 1938: Crystal Bird Fauset becomes the first black woman elected to a state legislature in the U.S. acquiring this distinction by being named to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Nov. 9, 1922: Dorothy Dandridge was born on this day in Cleveland, Ohio.
