HBO ACQUIRES ED NORTON'S OBAMA FILM: Documentary to air in spring; follows candidate before, during and after presidential run. *After months of courtship, HBO has closed a reported seven-figure deal for the U.S. rights to an untitled Barack Obama documentary produced by actor Edward Norton, according to the Hollywood Reporter. In early 2006, Norton and his Class 5 Films received permission from the Obama camp to produce a documentary about his history in politics. Over 2 1/2 years, the filmmakers had "unprecedented" access to the candidate, his family, friends and campaign volunteers, the network said. Sam Pollard, editor of HBO's Spike Lee documentary "When the Levees Broke," has been hired to edit the Obama film. The documentary is scheduled to air sometime in the spring.
*Comedian Katt Williams nearly missed his scheduled Carnegie Hall concert on Thursday after he was arrested on weapons charges just hours before show time. According to the Associated Press, police pulled him over early Thursday in midtown Manhattan for driving a car without license plates. He was hauled off to jail after a search of the vehicle turned up a handgun, authorities said. The 35-year-old comic, best known for his role in the movie "Friday After Next" and for the underground “Pimp Chronicles" film series, was released on bail just in time to make his show as part of the annual New York Comedy Festival. “I’m not moving at my usual pace, I just got out of jail 35 minutes ago,” he told the sold-out crowd, which included fellow comedian Chris Rock. Williams said President-elect Barack Obama kept his spirits up while behind bars. "I'm in jail with every emotion that I possess. I'm hurting 'cause I said I wouldn't go back to jail," the permed funnyman lamented. "Every time I see a white person, it reminds me of something. 'Oh, we got a black president!'" Williams later gave the adoring crowd his coat, tie and shoes, and took pictures with fans while wearing only his undershirt, jeans and socks.
*"The Oprah Winfrey Show” scored its best ratings of the season on Wednesday, when the TV host was finally able to celebrate her support for Barack Obama and his historic election victory the night before. The live broadcast – featuring political figures John Lewis, Gloria Steinem, David Gergen, Peggy Noonan and Henry Louis Gates – averaged a 6.5 household rating, according to Nielsen metered markets, her best rating in some nine months. Among women 25-54, the show averaged a 3.6 rating, its best since February. Meanwhile, there is talk that Winfrey has already decided not to renew her contract to extend "The Oprah Winfrey Show" beyond 2011. During a morning conference call on Friday, Discovery CEO David Zaslav said Winfrey will shutter the talk show in 2011 to focus on OWN, the eponymous cable network that Winfrey and Discovery will launch as partners next year.
*After years of searching for the right opportunity to work with Will Smith, director Steven Spielberg thinks he may have found the perfect project – an update of the 2003 Korean drama "Oldboy." Smith and Spielberg are in early discussions to remake the project, reports Variety. In Chan Wook-park's Korean-language original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new film will be distributed by Universal, reports Variety. Smith would play the kidnapped man if a deal between all parties can be hammered out. Spielberg is currently looking for a writer to begin the development process.
*The 27-year-old man questioned in the killings of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew could be released from jail today following a 9 a.m. parole hearing if an administrative officer finds no reason to hold him. William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer's sister Julia Hudson, is in custody on a parole violation but is also a "person of interest" in the triple murder investigation. No one has been charged in the shootings. The chairman of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, Jorge Montes, says that if an administrative officer finds cause to continue holding Balfour, the case then would go to a review board for a hearing. However, Montes says "conceivably" Balfour could be released, reports the Associated Press. Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the investigation of the killings is continuing and is independent of the prisoner review board's decisions. Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Balfour acknowledged being at the Hudson's Englewood home on the morning that the actress' mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson, were gunned down inside the house. Julia Hudson's son, Julian King, was abducted from the home and his body discovered three days later, shot twice in the head and slumped in the back of Jason Hudson's Chevy Suburban on a West Side street. Balfour's current girlfriend also told police that he told her he had been involved in the killings of Donerson and Hudson, sources told the Tribune.
*Chris Rock is putting his weight behind a re-imagining of the 2007 comedy "Death at a Funeral" from Screen Gems and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment (SKE) reports Variety. The comedian will team with co-writer Aeysha Carr to write the script, which is based on the SKE-produced original penned by Dean Craig and directed by Frank Oz. The story follows a funeral ceremony that leads to the digging up of shocking family secrets, as well as misplaced cadavers and indecent exposure. While the original was set in Britain, the new film will take place in an urban American setting. Screen Gems and SKE are currently seeking directors and plan to begin production next spring.
*One nephew of R&B star R. Kelly is in intensive care and another is in custody after both were arrested as suspects in an armed-robbery attempt at a Chicago-area barber shop, reports MTV News. Calumet City police told the Web site that either Brayel Kelly, 15, or his older brother Brandon Kelly went into a barbershop and requested a haircut. After receiving his haircut, he allegedly tried to rob the shop owner by flashing a weapon and demanding that the owner place his money and jewelry in a plastic bag. The man complied but also drew his own weapon. Police say the suspect fired, and the victim returned fire. The owner later told police that he believed he hit the robber. Brayel Kelly, one of six children (along with Brandon) belonging to R's estranged brother Carey Kelley, was shot in the abdomen/chest area and is hospitalized at Advocate Christ Medical Center. Carey told a local Fox reporter outside the hospital that his son was shot twice and that one bullet collapsed his lung on the right side, while the other pierced his liver. Before addressing to the armed-robbery call, police responded to a call two blocks away, where they found a juvenile who had been shot in the back. Brayel's older brother, Brandon, was arrested and police are investigating whether he acted as a lookout.
*Mariah Carey has revealed that she and her husband Nick Cannon did not engage in sexual activity until their wedding night. "It's not that we had no intimacy. It's just me, and my feelings," the singer told WENN. "I definitely don't want to push it on anybody else. But we both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was, and it still is." Carey and Cannon traveled to the Bahamas for their wedding in April following a two month romance.
*Prince has been ordered by a judge to shell out nearly $58,000 to a man who says the superstar never paid him for editing services and unreturned equipment. Video editor Ian C. Lewis was originally seeking $1 million in exemplary damages in his October 2007 lawsuit against Prince and his company, Paisley Park Enterprises.
*First there were reports that Michael Jackson would join his brothers in a reunion tour. Then, the singer, himself, released a statement denying the rumors, which his brother Jermaine had confirmed as true the previous day. Now, Billboard.com is hearing talk that Jackson may follow in the footsteps of Prince and perform a long engagement at London's 02 Arena. "A source confirms that there is a 'standing offer with no expiration' from AEG Live for Jackson to play at the O2," Billboard reported Friday. "The 02 is operated by Anschutz Entertainment Group, and any Jackson stand at the 02 would almost certainly be promoted by AEG Live, the live entertainment arm of AEG." Sources tell Billboard that Michael's decision not to participate in the reported Jackson 5 reunion tour may stem from his desire to do his own touring next year. In related news, Jackson's groundbreaking 1982 album "Thriller" jumped 41-1 on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart last week after selling 31,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan (a 1,000% increase). The move was fueled by the album's various anniversary celebrations that took place around the world last week. The set is now 2008's top-selling catalog album, having shifted 688,000 copies.
*Four days before Roy Jones Jr. stepped into the ring to face Welsh fighter Joe Calzaghe Saturday night, he was in tears as Barack Obama's election night victory was being celebrated outside of his window and around the world. The moment was captured on camera and aired on HBO's "24-7." "Now I can't help but to knock out Joe Calzaghe," Jones continued. "He'll have to kill me to beat me now!"

*Avid Hillary Clinton supporter Maya Angelou says she has been inspired to write a poem in honor of president-elect Barack Obama, who will be the first African American to hold the nation's highest office when he is sworn in on Jan. 20. But Angelou doesn't expect to be commissioned to recite her piece on Inauguration Day, as she did for the incoming president 16 years ago. "I'm sure Mr. Obama, president-elect, will have them bring his own poet," the 80-year-old writer told the Associated Press Friday from her home in Winston-Salem, where she holds a professorship at Wake Forest University. *Barack Obama's election victory Tuesday night sent visitors to Internet news sites in record numbers and caused a renewed interest in his two autobiographies, as well as other books about the president-elect. An average of 8.5 million visitors per minute clicked onto news Web sites worldwide from 11 p.m. to midnight, according to the Internet distribution company Akamai. The company typically reports an average of about three million visitors. *Directed by Malcolm Lee (Undercover Brother), Soul Men is an adult-oriented adventure which easily earns its R rating, as it relies heavily on salty language and a decidedly blue brand of humor. The film’s formulaic premise is familiar enough, despite the overindulgence in profanity, the N-word, coarse humor and graphic sexuality. Shamelessly borrowing elements from The Blues Brothers, Thelma & Louise and Trains, Planes and Automobiles and other buddy flicks, this rollicking road comedy makes up for its lack of originality with an earthy enthusiasm and infectious energy likely to endear it with any audience. Another plus is the sense of nostalgia generated by the movie’s postscript affectionately acknowledging the passing of both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, a couple of cultural icons who died after shooting was completed but prior to the picture’s release. Floyd Henderson (Mac) and Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) are former R&B legends who sang backup in a trio which a generation ago enjoyed a string of chart-topping hits. However, the group disbanded after front man Marcus Hooks (John Legend) decided to pursue a solo career. Floyd and Louis then tried touring as a duo, but a love triangle with a woman named Odetta (Monyetta Shaw) led to their breakup and quick slide into obscurity. Now, 20 years later, Marcus has just died and the music industry is planning a big tribute concert to him at the Apollo Theater in five days. Floyd sees this as an opportunity to mount a comeback. So, he shows up unannounced at Louis’ home to find that his estranged partner’s still wants nothing to do with him, at least until a promise of a 60-40 split of the $40,000 purse. With Louis conveniently afraid of flying, the two agree to drive cross country from L.A. to New York in what else but a classic convertible, a staple of the road genre, in this case a vintage Cadillac Eldorado. Floyd has already booked warm-up gigs at nightclubs in several cities they’re planning to pass through en route, so that they’ll be ready to perform by the time they hit the stage at the Apollo. Of course, judging from movies, the whole point of embarking on any road trip is the concatenation of calamities which invariably ensue, and Soul Men certainly has its share of such surprises, ranging from a flat tire to a heckler to a drunken fan to a stint in jail to a one-night stand with a toothless groupie (Jennifer Coolidge). The plot thickens when our heroes rendezvous with Cleo (Sharon Leal), an aspiring-singer who might be the long-lost daughter of one of them by way of Odetta. Cleo accepts the pair’s offer to join the group and the trio arrives at the Apollo with the paternity issue resolved and right on time to give dearly-departed Marcus a glorious sendoff. Yeah, you’ll laugh here and there at the outrageous antics of Bernie and Sam (who even prove they can sing and dance here), given their screen chemistry and larger than life personas. Just don’t expect the flava of this cinematic equivalent of bubblegum to last past the closing credits and you won’t be disappointed. Very Good (2.5 stars) To see a trailer for Soul Men, visit:
