THE UK CORNER (DVD REVIEW): It's Pimpin' Pimpin'(November 18, 2008)
*In the UK most people are familiar with Katt Williams from his TV appearances on My wife and Kids, Girlfriends or Wild 'n' Out. His Charisma, as evidenced further in his skits, was apparent on those shows and this left viewers intrigued to know more. His latest DVD release It's pimpin' pimpin' gives them that opportunity. Filmed at the historic Constitution Hall in Washington D.C., Katt delivers the show that the live audience awaited. But, for someone like me, who had not seen his previous stand up routines a la Pimp Chronicles Pt 1., American Hustle, or First Sunday, I didn't know what to expect. I have to admit it took me a while to grasp his sense of humour, but as I got to see more of his personality unfold, he increasingly grew on me. Dressed in jeans and a shirt with a touch of sparkle, Katt shone as he dropped witty lines about politics and relationships. He also made known his observations on racism, controversially using the N word in reference to key political figures. I was uneasy with this though he did explain that for him, the word was a reminder about the progression and achievements of black people. Standing in front of a picture of the White House he quipped that there were two sides to Washington - the picture representing what the world sees and the audience, being what D.C. is really about. What captivated me was his mantra of looking out for your "star player" (yourself). He spoke of being "selfish" in 2008. All the success that he has garnered suggests that he may have a point. Not that Katt is egotistical - he has adopted seven children. They were not speared as inspiration for his jokes. Not one to be politically correct, he took a few low blows at celebrities and politicians. He was also willing to be self-deprecating for a laugh as he joked about his height. Katt fluently delivered his routine and even worked bloopers in seamlessly. His comedic insights into politics suggest he may well be a social commentator to reckon with rather than just a funny man. His stints as an impressionist with elements of slap stick hint at his acting abilities. Not all his material transfers internationally, but what is certain is that he brings something different to the table.
